Edit and format messages

You can change the text and format elements of your messages as you build them, or any time afterward. Not all elements are available on all message types.

Editing message text

The default text on the Funding Choices message depends on message type as well as your app or site name. Whichever type of message you're using, most of the text is editable.

  1. Sign in to your Funding Choices account at https://fundingchoices.google.com/.
  2. Select the app or site with the message you want to edit.
  3. Select the message you want to edit.
  4. Select the dialog within the message you want to edit. For some message types, you can use the stepper at the top of the page to locate the dialog you want to edit.
  5. For app messages, select the language code from the Language code drop down that corresponds to the language you want to edit.
  6. Click the element you want to edit (for example, body text or button text).
  7. Make your edits. 
  8. Click Save. If the message is currently published, you’ll see a warning that your changes will go live shortly after saving.

Formatting message elements

When you change the formatting of an element, it changes that element on all the applicable dialogs. For example, if you change body text of the "Consent request" dialog to green,  the body text of the "Consent alternative" dialog is also changed to green.

To change the formatting of a message element:

  1. Sign in to your Funding Choices account at https://fundingchoices.google.com/.
  2. Select the app or site with the consent request you want to edit.
  3. Select the message you want to edit.
  4. (Optional) Depending on the message type, you may be able to use the stepper at the top of the page to locate the dialog you want to edit. For example, Consent request, Consent alternative, or Ad tech providers
  5. Select the element you want to format in the dialog itself, or in the right-hand menu (for example, Body). 

Formatting controls

Depending on which message element you are formatting, one or more of the following controls may be available:

  • Body: Font family
  • Style: Bold, italic, or underline.
  • Alignment: Left, Right, Center.
  • Font size: Font size is in "em" units, which allows the text to scale with the viewer's screen size or browser settings.
  • Font color: Enter your own Hex- or RGB-defined color by clicking the Save icon.
  • Use site style (for site messages only): For some elements, click Font family, then select Use your site style. The message font will be pulled from the site's style sheet upon publishing, but is not displayed in the message builder preview.

"Global" element

  • Primary color: Applied to the following message elements: 
    • background color of the primary message button
    • font color of the third message button (when it is included)
    • icon backgrounds
    • toggles
    • font color of the Vendor preferences link
    • close button on help dialog triggered from the message
  • Secondary color: Applied to the background color of the secondary button in a message.

"Buttons" element

  • Primary color: Applied to the font color of the primary message button.
  • Secondary color: Applied to the font color of the secondary message button.

For EU consent/GDPR messages, the IAB Europe Transparency & Consent Framework Policies require that the buttons displayed in your messages must not be invisible, illegible, or appear disabled. While the buttons do not need to be identical, to ensure they are clearly visible, they must have matching text treatment (font, font size, font style) and, for the text of each, a minimum contrast ratio of 5 to 1.

This means that the background color and font color of the buttons displayed in your messages must differ enough to be easily readable. When you set the button background and font colors, we will detect whether there is enough contrast between the colors and let you know if you need to adjust the colors you've selected.
