Occasionally a firmware update will start and stop or otherwise fail.
Before you update, ensure that:
- Your Fitbit device runs the latest firmware. For more information, go to How to Update Your Fitbit Device, Google Pixel Watch, and Scale Firmware.
- The device is charged to at least 50%. A charge of 75% or higher is recommended to prevent power loss.
- The Fitbit app on your phone or tablet is the latest version available in your app store.
- You have a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
Tip:
- Keep the app running: Updates can take up to an hour. Keep the Fitbit application running in the background while the device syncs.
- Step count accuracy: If you update your Fitbit device right as the day changes (at midnight), your step count might be wrong for a day.
Reconnect device to host phone or tablet
If the device fails to sync or an update doesn’t begin, try to:
- Force quit the Fitbit app on the host phone or tablet.
- Go to the phone's Settings and turn Bluetooth off. Wait a minimum of 10 seconds, and then turn it back on. This resets the phone's Bluetooth radio stack.
- Restart the Fitbit device using the standard, device-specific procedure. For instructions, go to How do I restart my Fitbit device?
- Perform a full restart of the host mobile phone or tablet.
- Ensure the Fitbit device remains physically close to the host phone (within 2 to 3 feet).
- Temporarily disable Bluetooth on all other nearby devices, including secondary mobile phones. Also disable smart home hubs, or other wearable devices. Multiple paired devices can cause connectivity issues with the Fitbit device.
Advanced Troubleshooting
This process removes your old connection profile to ensure a fresh start when you pair again.
- Remove device from the app: Navigate to your device settings within the Fitbit app then select the option to remove the device from your account. For instructions, refer to How do I set up my Fitbit device?
- Forget device from phone: Go to the phone's native system settings such as Connected devices or Bluetooth. Locate your Fitbit device in the previously paired devices list.
Important: Failure to do this leaves residual, corrupted data that prevents successful re-pairing.
- For iPhone and iPad: Tap Forget This Device.
- For Android: Tap Unpair or Forget.
- Reset-up device: Force quit the Fitbit app, then reopen it and follow the on-screen instructions to set the device up again. For instructions, refer to How do I set up my Fitbit device?
Managing the local data cache of the Fitbit app on the mobile device frequently solves connectivity issues. This is crucial for fixing persistent sync problems such as delayed sleep data display.
Android deep cache clearing
- Go to Settings
Apps.
- Tap Fitbit
Storage
Clear Cache.
iOS cache workaround
- iOS architecture typically doesn’t permit manual cache clearing. The functional equivalent for iPhone or iPad users is the full Uninstall and Reinstall of the Fitbit app, which should only be attempted after the device has been fully "forgotten" from the OS Bluetooth settings.
Important:
- These troubleshooting steps are only recommended as a last resort for unresponsive devices, devices stuck in boot loops, or persistent update failures that have "bricked" the device.
- A factory reset erases all data stored locally on the device. This includes unsynced activity statistics, alarms, goals, and notification settings. The device returns to a factory state and you must set it up again.
Follow the factory reset instructions in How do I restart my Fitbit device?

If the update still fails:
- Log in to your Fitbit account on a different phone or tablet and attempt the update.
- Ensure Bluetooth is off on the original phone to avoid conflicts.
- Contact Customer Support.
If you can’t update Fitbit Versa Lite Edition, check the firmware version on your watch:
- Open the Settings app
on your watch, then tap About.
- Check if the number under “Version” is “38.6.1.1.” If it is, attach your watch to the charging cable and plug it into a USB port on your computer before you begin the update.
- Keep your Fitbit device close to your phone or tablet to complete the update.
- In a few days, you’ll receive another prompt to update your watch. At that point, you can update as normal without plugging your watch into a computer.
