Nexus 6 Activation Problem

Others seem to be having similar problems, but I'm getting a code unlike anyone else's: D002.

Background: I ordered this Nexus 6 through Fi when I first received my Invite 3 months ago - things were dandy until I decided to pre-order a N5x and give the N6 to my wife, who also had an invite. My wife clicked into her invite, indicated that we had a Nexus 6, and that her number was to be transferred over from Verizon. The process asked us to order a sim card, for which we paid $15.99 for 1-business day shipping. When it didn't arrive, we called support, which told us that Version 2 was backordered, but offered us Version 1, to be shipped immediately; we accepted.

Version 1 sim arrived, and after we inserted it into the phone, we got the message "Contact Us - Unfortunately your Project Fi service can't be activated because your account currently isn't authorized for service", with error Code B010. We then called support, and despite talking to 4 separate reps over 3 days, and a factory reset to completely get rid of my account from the phone, same message appears, now with a different error code: D002.

Another poster posted that he'd discovered two sims listed on his device, but I only found one, the one with the correct phone number to be transferred over from Verizon, with the word "scheduled" in parenthesis.

We need help here, as we're quite done with the Fi phone reps, who don't seem to know what to do with this problem. PLEASE ESCALATE US TO SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP US!

I'm also wondering if we can return this phone to Google, and be sent a 6P, while paying the difference? Something is really messed up between the fact that I used this phone with my own account in the past, and the fact that the first sim card (Version 2) was canceled, etc. etc. I have no idea where the hangup is, but we can't be left hanging like this!

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP! Thank you.

Hey Pat. Thanks for using the Project Fi Help Forum. It sounds like the problem you are having is the fact that your Google Account is still activated on the Nexus 6 device. I am not entirely clear, based on your post, whether you have received your new Nexus 5X and activated service there yet. However, you do need to activate your Project Fi service on another supported device before being able to activate another Google Account on the original device.

Please let me know if this is the case. I understand how frustrating not being able to activate service will be.

Look in the Project Fi app on the phone. If there are 2 "devices", delete one. For some reason when you have ordered 2 dims, this causes a problem.

Oh sorry! I see you already looked there.

Hi Ian, it's good to hear from you again. What you recommend is in fact the one thing that I have not had a chance to try yet, as my N5x arrives only this coming Monday. I will then activate the N5x first, then see if that clear things up for the N6. I was under the impression that if I factory-reset the N6, clearing traces of my account from that phone, it'd be ready to receive and work with a new account - apparently not.

Thanks for your feedback; I'll report back after I've activated my N5x. Have a nice weekend.

No need to apologize; you were only trying to help! And yes, I was looking really hard for that second theme on the screen, but no.

Based on my experience.:

If you get error code D002, then the device you are activating is already associated with an account. In OP's case, the error code D002 would have showed up since the N6 was associated with account A but he was trying to activate N6 with account B (before releasing it from account A).

If you have a new N6 or a new Project fi compatible phone, then you need to pull the sim from the current phone (N6 in OPs) case, put it into the new phone (N5 X) and then activate project fi on the new device. At this point the device will ask you to confirm if this is your primary device. Set it as primary and the service should resume for N5 X). Now I believe you will need to go into your account and remove the N6 phone.

Once N6 is removed, go to apps, wipe data on project fi and sprint dm apps and insert the new sim card on N6. Activate with the new google account. The phone should activate (in theory :) )

now you can factory reset the phone and set it up as a new phone for the second user.

If you buy a device from outside and the device has not been released from project fi, then the activation would continue to fail with D002 till Google fixes it in the back end (may not be possible everytime) or you get a phone that is clean and not registered in Google's system
