Mark and return an assignment

This article is for teachers.

In Classroom, you can give a numeric mark, leave comment-only feedback or do both. You can also return assignments without marks.

You can mark and return work from:

  • The Student work page.
  • The Classroom marking tool.
  • The Marks page.

For instructions on the Marks page, go to View or update your student record.

For practice sets, learn how to mark a practice set assignment.

You can download marks for one assignment or for all assignments in a class.

Note: You might notice slight visual differences between tablets and phones.

Display assignments or import quiz marks

Display student assignments

Before viewing a student's assignment, you can see the status of student work, and the number of students in each category.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Select the class.
  3. At the top, select Classwork.
  4. Select the assignment to display.
  5. On the right, select the number over 'Handed in' or 'Assigned'. The Student work page is displayed.
    • Tip: You can only get to the student work page when the number isn't '0' for both 'Handed in' and 'Assigned'.
  6. On the Student work page, you see the status of student's work:
    • Assigned – Work that students have to hand in, including missing or unsubmitted work
    • Handed in – Work that students have handed in
    • Marked – Marked work that you’ve returned
    • Returned – Unmarked (non-marked) work that you've returned
  7. To view a student's submission, tap their name and then any files they attached.

Import quiz marks

This feature is only available in the computer version of Classroom. To see the instructions, click Computer.

Enter, review or change marks

When you enter a mark, it syncs between the marking tool, the Marks page and the Student work page.

As you mark assignments, you might notice the work or mark status is colour-coded:

  • Red – Missing work.
  • Green – Handed in work or draft mark.
  • Black – Returned work.

Other colours are based on your class theme and don’t indicate work or mark status.

Enter a mark on the Student work page
You can edit or comment in any document in Drive. Your edits or comments are automatically saved and ready for the student to review when they open the document.
You can also add feedback directly onto student work. Learn more about writing notes on student work.
Students can't edit any files attached to an assignment that's been handed in until it's returned.
  1. Tap Classroom .
  2. Tap the class and then Classwork and then the assignment.
  3. Optional: The default marking scale is numerical based on the total points of the assignment. Education Plus and Teaching Learning editions have the option for expanded marking scales. You can align Classroom marking to your school's system whether:
    • Alphabetical, for example letter marks (A to F) or proficiency (unsatisfactory to excellent)
    • Numeric, for example, 4-point scales
    • Custom marking scales, for example, emojis

    Marking scales features work with:

    • Average mark calculation
    • Rubrics
    • SIS integration
    • Analytics
    • Practice sets and forms auto-marking
    • You can enter a mark either for the number of points or, if you have marking scales set up,  based on the levels on the marking scale. For example, if you have letter marks set up in your class and you assign a 10-point assignment, under 'Mark' you can:
      • Enter '8'
      • Enter 'Good'
      • Select 'Good 8/10' from the drop-down menu
    • You and your co-teachers can find all marks in both points value and the level it corresponds to.
    • A student can find both the points value and the level it corresponds to if a mark is returned.
    • You can only set up marking scales through a computer.
  1. Tap the student's name.
  2. Tap Add mark and enter the mark.
    The mark saves automatically.
  3. Choose one:
    • To return to the Student work page, in the top-left corner, tap Close .
