Grade and return question answers

You can see the current status of a student's work on the Student Work page.
View answers
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork. 
  4. Click the question.
  5. On the Student answers page, you can review the following details:

    Note: If a student unsubmits work, the work is counted as Assigned.

    • Turned in—The number and names of students who submitted work.
    • Assigned—The number and names of students who haven't submitted work.
    • Graded—The number and names of the students you’ve returned work to.
    • (Optional) To see the students in each category, click Turned in, Assigned, or Graded.
  6. For a multiple-choice question, click an option to see the number of students who chose it. 
  7. On the left, click a student's name to see their answer. 
    • To view the history of a student’s grade changes and submissions, click See history.
    • To add a private comment, at the bottom, click Add private comment. Enter your comment and click Post.
    • To reply to a student’s short-answer question, click Reply Reply. Enter your comment and click Post.
      Note: All students can see your comment.
    • To return to the summary, click Close Close.

Tip: To sort by student, click the Down arrow Down Arrow above the list of students. 

Grade and return an answer
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then Classwork and then the question.
  3. (Optional) The default point value is 100. To change it, click the point value. Enter another value or select Ungraded and then Update.
  4. On the left, next to the student's name, click Add grade and enter the grade.
  5. Note: For decimal grades, Classroom supports 2 digits after the decimal point. If you enter more than 2 digits, the grade is rounded to the nearest 2-digit decimal form. For example, if you enter 88.725, it’s rounded to 88.73.
    You can return grades now or later. However, for students to get a notification about new grades, you need to return their grade.  

  6. Check the box next to each student whose grade you want to return and click Return.
  7. Click Return again to confirm.

 

Change a grade
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then Classwork and then the question.
  3. Click the grade you want to change.
  4. Enter the new grade. The grade is automatically saved but not returned to the student.
  5. (Optional) To return the new grade:
    1. Check the box next to the student’s name and click Return.
    2. Click Return again to confirm.
Export grades

After you return grades, you can export them from Classroom to Google Sheets or to a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

Export grades to Sheets

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then click the question.
  3. Click Settings Settings and then Copy all grades to Google Sheets.

    The spreadsheet is created in the class Drive folder. 

Export grades to a CSV file

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then click the question.
  3. Click Settings Settings and choose an option:
    • To download only this assignment’s grades, select Download these grades as CSV.
    • To download all class assignment and question grades, select Download all grades as CSV

    The file is saved in your Downloads folder.

Comment on ungraded questions

You can give students feedback when they answer an ungraded question. You can leave comments for individual students or the entire class. 

Short-answer questions

On the Stream page, to view student answers, click the question. You reply to individual students on the Student answers page. 

  1. Click a student's name.
  2. Click Reply Reply.
    Click Reply  
  3. Enter your comment. 
  4. When you're done, click Post

To add a class comment, at the top of the page:

  1. Click Question.
  2. Click Add class comment.

Multiple-choice questions

On the Stream page, click the question. This takes you to the Student answers page. 

  1. To see an answer, click a student's name. 
  2. At the bottom of the page, click Add private comment.
