Give feedback on assignments

This page is for teachers.

You can give your students personalized feedback with the new Classroom grading tool. The grading tool is a comprehensive tool that allows you to review assignments of any file type, switch seamlessly between student assignments, add margin comments and feedback, and grade and return work.

Assignment file types

Students can attach any file type to their assignments, including:

  • Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides
  • Microsoft®️ Word®️, Excel®️, or PowerPoint®️
  • PDF
  • Image files
  • Text files
  • Video files (WEBM, MPEG4, 3GPP, MOV, AVI, MPEG-PS, WMV, FLV, OGG)

View student assignments

Open a student assignment in the grading tool

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then Classwork.
  3. Click the assignment and then View Question or View Assignment.
  4. Click the student name and then a file they turned in.

    The file opens in the Classroom grading tool.

Switch between student assignments

To see another student’s assignment while grading, choose one:

  • Click the Down arrow Down Arrow and choose a student name.

  • Click Back Back or Next Next.

Add feedback

If you enter the same comment for many students, you can save the comment to use later. The comment bank is tied to your Google Account, so you can access it from any computer. To edit and delete comments in the comment bank, go to classroom.google.com/g/cm.

Add comments to an assignment
  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Highlight the passage you want to comment on and click Add a comment Add comment.

  3. Enter your comment and click Comment.
Add and save comments to use later

You have 2 ways to add comments to the comment bank.

Add an existing comment to the comment bank

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. To add a comment you wrote to the comment bank, in the top-right corner of the comment box, click More Moreand select Add to comment bank.
  3. (Optional) Edit your comment.
  4. Click Add.

Enter a comment directly into the comment bank

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank.
  3. Click Add to comment bank and enter your comment.
  4. Click Add.

Note: To view and modify your comment bank, open an assignment or go to the comment bank manager.

Find and use a comment in the comment bank

You have 3 ways to search for, and then use, comment bank comments.

Use hash and autocomplete

To make it easy to find comment, Classroom autocompletes content you enter after a hash #. As you enter the content, a list of matching comments appears. This list narrows as you enter more content.

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Highlight text and click Add comment Add comment.
  3. In the comment box, enter # and then enter a keyword or phrase.
    Classroom’s suggestions autocomplete as you type.
  4. To insert the comment, click the comment and then Comment.

Use only a hash

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Highlight text and click Add comment Add comment.
  3. In the comment box, enter only a hash #. The 5 most recently used comments appear.

Search

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Highlight the text and click Add comment Add comment.
  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank and then Search Search.
  4. Point to the comment you want to use and click More Moreand then Copy to clipboard.
  5. In the comment box, paste the comment.
  6. (Optional) Personalize the comment.
  7. Click Comment.
Edit a comment in the comment bank
  1. Choose one:
  2. In the comment bank, point to the comment you want to edit and then click Comment options Moreand then Edit.
  3. Enter your changes and click Save.
Copy a comment in the comment bank
  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. In the comment bank, search for the comment.
  3. In the comment bank, point to the comment and then click Comment options Moreand then Copy to clipboard.
    The comment is copied to the clipboard.
Delete a comment from the comment bank
  1. Choose one:
  2. In the comment bank, point to the comment you want to delete and then click Comment options Moreand then Delete.
  3. Click Delete again to confirm.
Add private comments
  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Under Private comments, click Add private comment.
  3. Enter your feedback and click Post.
