Grade and return an assignment

This page is for teachers. 

You can see the current status of students’ work on the Student Work page.

If you make a copy of a Google Drive item for each student and a student opens it, you’ll see their copy on the Student Work page. You can review work in progress and add comments to the file. If a student doesn’t open the file, there’s nothing for you to review.

View student assignments
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Classwork and then the assignment.
  3. On the Student Work page, you can review the following details:
    • Turned in—The number and names of students who submitted work.
    • Assigned—The number and names of students who haven't submitted work.
      If a student unsubmits work, the work is marked as Assigned.
    • Graded—If your assignment is graded, the number and names of students you've graded and returned work to.
    • Returned—If your assignment is ungraded, the number and names of students you've returned work to.
  4. Tap a student's name to view their submission.
  5. Tap the thumbnail to open and review any attached files.

Enter a grade on the Student Work page

You can edit or comment in any document in Drive. Your edits or comments are automatically saved and ready for the student to review when they open the document.
You can also add feedback directly onto student work. Learn more about writing notes on student work.
Students can’t edit any files attached to an assignment that’s turned in until it's returned.
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Classwork and then the assignment.
  3. (Optional) The default point value is 100. To change it, at the top, tap the point value.
    Enter another value or select Ungraded and then Save and then Update.

    Note: For decimal grades, Classroom supports 2 digits after the decimal point. If you enter more than 2 digits, the grade is rounded to the nearest 2-digit decimal form. For example, if you enter 88.725, it’s rounded to 88.73.
  4. Tap the student's name.
  5. Tap Add grade and enter the grade. The grade is automatically saved.
  6. Tap Close Close to return to the Student Work page.
To update students about their grades, you need to return the assignment to them. You can return assignments during another session. 
Return an assignment

Students can’t edit any files attached to an assignment that’s turned in until it's returned.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Classwork and then the assignment.
  3. Tap the box next to each student whose assignment you want to return.
  4. Tap Return and then Return again to confirm.

When you return an assignment, students get an email or mobile notification if they have notifications set up.

Note: Assignments can be returned to students without a grade. 

Change a grade

You can change a grade after you return an assignment to students. Also, students can do more work and resubmit the assignment. You can then change the grade and return the assignment again.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Classwork and then the assignment.
  3. Tap the name of the student whose grade you want to change.
  4. Tap the grade and enter a new one.
    The grade is automatically saved.
  5. Choose one:
    • To go back to the Student Work page, tap Close Close.
    • To immediately return the assignment to the student, tap Return and then Update.

Note: To update students about new grades, you need to return the assignment again.

See the grade and submission history of an assignment

You can see how the grade for an assignment has changed and how many times a student has submitted an assignment.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Classwork and then the assignment.
  3. Tap the name of a student.
  4. At the top, tap More More and then See history.
 
 
Export grades
This feature is only available in the computer version of Classroom. To see the instructions, click Computer.

My class doesn't have the Classwork page

View student assignments
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then tap the assignment.
  3. Tap Student Work to see who has or hasn't submitted their work.
  4. Tap a student's name to view their submission.
  5. (Optional) Tap the thumbnail to open and review any file the student attached.
  6. (Optional) To add a private comment, tap Add private comment, enter your comment, and tap Post Post.
  7. (Optional) To add a comment to the class, tap Close Close and then Instructions and then Add class comment. Enter your comment and tap Post Post.

Grade an assignment

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.

  2. Tap the class and then tap the assignment.
  3. Tap Student Work.

Important: Grades are automatically saved. To update students about their grades, you need to return the assignment to them. You can return assignments during another session. However, private comments entered during grading won't be saved unless you return the assignment immediately.

Return an assignment

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then tap the assignment.
  3. Tap Student Work.
  4. Tap the box next to each student whose assignment you want to return. Tap Return and confirm.

Note: When you return an assignment, students get an email or mobile notification if they have notifications set up.

Change a grade
