This article is for administrators.
As a Google Workspace administrator, you can set up Classroom add-ons so teachers can share engaging activities and content with students. Add-ons can be attached to assignments, quiz assignments, questions, materials, or announcements.
What you need to use add-ons in Classroom
- You must be using Google Workspace for Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning upgrade.
- Add-ons can only be created and assigned on the web version of Classroom.
- Add-ons can be viewed, completed, and graded on both the web and mobile versions of Classroom
Set up an add-on
There are 2 ways for administrators to set up an add-on:
- Admin install: Install an add-on for teachers within a group, organizational unit, or domain.
- Important: Only an admin can install some add-ons.
- Allowlist: Allow teachers to individually install add-ons
- Important:
- Even when the Google Workspace Marketplace is set to "Allow users to install and run any app from the Marketplace," Classroom add-ons must be allowlisted individually.
- If Classroom add-ons were installed before July 2022 but aren’t allowlisted, these add-ons continue to run.
- Important:
Admin install a Classroom add-on
From a browser:
- Go to Google Workspace Marketplace.
- At the top, select the “Works with” filter.
- Check the box next to Classroom.
- Click Done. Available Classroom add-ons are displayed.
- Click the add-on you want to install Install.
From the Admin console:
- Sign in to your Google Admin console.
- Click Apps Google Workspace Marketplace apps Apps list.
- Click Install app.
- At the top, select the “Works with” filter.
- Check the box next to Classroom.
- Click Done. Available Classroom add-ons are displayed.
- Click the add-on you want to install Install.
Once an add-on is installed, it becomes available for teachers to use with assignments, quiz assignments, questions, materials, or announcements.
Allowlist a Classroom add-on
To manage your allowlist:
- Sign in to your Google Admin console.
- Click Apps Google Workspace Marketplace apps Apps list.
- At the top, click Allowlist App.
- Select add-ons you want to add to your allowlist.
- To change your allowlist settings, under "Apps list," click Settings.
Once an add-on is allowlisted, unless the Admin Console setting is “Don’t allow users to install and run apps from the Marketplace,” teachers can create an assignment and install add-ons individually.
As a reminder, you are responsible for getting parental consent, where required, for the use of third-party applications.
