Manage & restore your device backups in Google Drive

Important: To backup your Pixel phone or Nexus device, update it to Android 6.0 or up.  

You can back up and restore the following items on your Pixel phone or Nexus device:

  • Apps
  • Call History
  • Device Settings
  • Contacts
  • Calendar
  • SMS (Pixel phones only)
  • Photos & videos (Pixel phones only)

Find and manage backups

  1. Open the Google Drive app.
  2. Tap Menu Menu.
  3. Tap Backups.
  4. Tap on the backup you want to manage.

Delete a backup

If you delete a backup, you cannot get it back.

  1. Find a backup you want to delete.
  2. Next to the backup’s name, tap More More.
  3. Tap Delete backup.

What happens when your backup expires

Your backup will remain as long as you use your device. If you don't use your device for 2 weeks, you may see an expiration date below your backup.

Example: "Expires in 54 days."

  • Your backups will use your Google Drive quota.
  • You can use your backup to restore your messages and attachments to WhatsApp.
  • You can stop and delete backups, but you won't be able to look at the files inside the backup.

Delete or stop backups

You can see how large your backup is in Google Drive. If you delete your backup or app data from Google Drive, you can’t get it back.

  1. Open the Google Drive app.
  2. Tap Menu Menu.
  3. Tap Backups.
  4. Next to the backup you want to delete, tap More More.
  5. Tap Turn off backup.
