Get started with Google Workspace Labs

Important: This article is referring to Google Workspace Labs, which is a trusted tester program for users to try new AI features. Workspace Labs is currently available to trusted testers in US English and may not be available in your country. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open a document on Google Docs and look for Help me write (Labs) on the left of the document.

Workspace Labs is a way for you to experiment with AI-assisted capabilities in our products and share feedback. As a Workspace Labs participant, you have early access to test features that may change over time. 

Before you use Workspace Labs

  • Workspace Labs feature suggestions don’t represent Google’s views, and should not be attributed to Google.
  • Don’t rely on Workspace Labs features as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
  • Workspace Labs features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information. Your feedback makes Workspace Labs more helpful and safe.
  • Don’t include personal, confidential, or sensitive information.
  • Google uses Workspace Labs data and metrics to provide, improve, and develop products, services, and machine learning technologies across Google. When you interact with Workspace Labs features, Google collects your Workspace Labs data, including your prompts and input, prompt and input refinements, generated output, generated output refinements, and feedback. Google also collects metrics on the usage of these features.
  • To help develop Workspace Labs features, human reviewers may read, annotate, and process your Workspace Labs interactions data.

Get started writing with AI in Google Docs
In Google Docs, you can use artificial intelligence to suggest text based on your prompts. For example, you can use the “Help me write (Labs)” prompt to draft a blog post or write song lyrics, or you can use it to rewrite existing text to be more detailed or more concise.
Quickly create or refine emails in Gmail
In Gmail, you can use artificial intelligence to draft emails based on your prompts. For example, you can use the “Help me write (Labs)” button in Gmail and enter a prompt to draft a cover letter for a job or a birthday invitation to your friends, or you can use it to refine a draft to be more detailed or more concise.
Create images with AI in Google Slides
Important: The "Help me visualize" prompt in Google Slides is rolling out gradually, and it may not be available to you yet.
In Google Slides, you can use artificial intelligence to create images based on your prompts. For example, you can use the “Help me visualize” button and enter a prompt to create an image of a picnic or an abstract painting.
Organize with AI in Google Sheets

In Google Sheets, you can use artificial intelligence to suggest tables based on your prompts. For example, you can use the “Help me organize (Workspace Labs)” feature to draft a trip plan or a task tracker.

Enhanced Smart Fill with AI in Google Sheets

Important: enhanced Smart Fill in Google Sheets is rolling out gradually, and it may not be available to you yet.

In Google Sheets, enhanced Smart Fill suggestions can make manual text processing tasks easier for you by automatically detecting the relationship between incomplete column pairs and using artificial intelligence to predict the remaining values, allowing them to be instantly filled. For example, you can use enhanced Smart Fill to finish filling out a feedback categorization column based on existing data.

Create background images with AI in Google Meet

Important: The "Generate a background" prompt in Google Meet is rolling out gradually, and it may not be available to you yet.

On Google Meet, you can use the “Generate a background” prompt to create background images using artificial intelligence. For example, you can ask Google Meet to create an illustration of a magical forest.

Look your best with studio look in Google Meet

Important: Studio look in Google Meet is rolling out gradually, and it may not be available to you yet.

Studio look uses Google’s AI to help improve your Google Meet video quality and fixes issues caused by low light or low quality webcams. This process automatically happens in the cloud to enhance video quality without an impact to device performance. Learn more about studio look.

Troubleshooting issues with Workspace Labs features

If you have trouble accessing Workspace Labs features, try the solutions below:

  • Check that your language is set to English (United States). Learn how to change the language for your Google account.
  • Check if Workspace Labs is available in your country. Learn more about where Workspace Labs is available.
  • If you previously opted out of Workspace Labs, you cannot access Workspace Labs features. Learn more about exiting Workspace Labs.
  • Check how you’re accessing Google Workspace. Workspace Labs is not available if you are on a school account.
  • Workspace Labs is not available if you are not 18 years or older.

Turn off Workspace Labs features

Important: To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you will permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you won’t be able to rejoin Workspace Labs. Learn more about turning off enhanced Smart Fill without exiting Workspace Labs.
