Manage Chrome Browser on Android devices

As an administrator, you can deploy and manage Chrome Browser to users on Android devices. Use managed configurations to configure Chrome Browser for a group or organizational unit without any user interaction. You can also create multiple managed configurations for Chrome Browser and apply them to different groups and organizational units.

Before you begin

Step 1: Approve Chrome Browser

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Devices.

    To see Devices, you might have to click More controls at the bottom.

  3. On the left, click App managementand thenManage apps for Android devices.
  4. Click Manage Whitelisted Apps.
  5. At the bottom right, click Add Add.
  6. At the top of Google Play, search for and click Google Chrome.
  7. Click Approve.
  8. Read the app permissions and click Approve.
  9. Choose how you want to handle new app permission requests, such as access to in-app purchases or identity information. You can:
    • Automatically reapprove an app when it requests new permissions.
    • Remove an app from your whitelist until you reapprove it.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Select the users you want to whitelist the app for and click Continue.
    You can whitelist the app for:
    • All users in your organization
    • A specific group of users
  12. Specify your app configuration options and click Save. You can:
    • Automatically install the app on users’ devices now.
    • Prevent users from uninstalling the app.
    • Allow users to add an app widget (when available) for a Home screen shortcut.

The app appears in the whitelist almost immediately. It will be available for users to install from managed Google Play or the Work Apps tab of the managed Google Play store the next time their device synchronizes with Google Mobile Management. If a user installs an app from outside of the managed Google Play store or the Work Apps tab, the app isn't managed.

Step 2: Create a managed configuration

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Devices.

    To see Devices, you might have to click More controls at the bottom.

  3. On the left, click App managementand thenManage apps for Android devices.
  4. Click Manage Whitelisted Apps.
  5. Find and click Google Chrome.
    To only see the apps that are whitelisted for a specific user or group of users, use the filters on the left. You can select an organizational unit, group, or user. You can also choose to only view public or private apps.
  6. In the Managed Configurations section, click Create New Managed Configuration.
    The option is only available for apps that support managed configurations.
  7. Enter a name and set your preferred configuration.
    Note: The developer of the app defines the configuration options made available to you. If you have questions about these settings, contact the developer.
  8. Click Save.

Step 3: Assign managed configurations

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Devices.

    To see Devices, you might have to click More controls at the bottom.

  3. On the left, click App managementand thenManage apps for Android devices.
  4. Click Manage Whitelisted Apps.
  5. Find and click Google Chrome.
    To only see the apps that are whitelisted for a specific user or group of users, use the filters on the left. You can select an organizational unit, Google Group, or user. You can also choose to only view public or private apps.
  6. To manage Chrome Browser preferences for a new organizational unit or group:
    1. Click Add more.
    2. Choose the group or organizational unit you want to change app preferences for:
      • Select Organizational Unitand thenan organizational unit from the menu.
      • Select Groupand thenstart entering the group’s nameand thenchoose the one you want to edit.
    3. Click Continue.
    4. Choose the managed configuration that you want to apply to the group or organizational unit.
    5. Click Save.
  7. To manage Chrome Browser preferences for an existing organizational unit or group:
    1. Next to the group or organizational unit you want to change app preferences for, click MoreMoreand thenEdit configuration.
    2. Choose the managed configuration that you want to apply.
    3. Click Update.
