You may get extra Google Chat notifications if you have multiple apps on your mobile device, like the Gmail, Google Chat, and classic Hangouts apps. To avoid duplicate notifications, follow these steps.
Remove the classic Hangouts app
Important: If you use Google Chat with a Google Workspace account and you need classic Hangouts to chat with people outside your organization, keep both apps on your mobile device until you can switch to Google Chat. To avoid duplicate notifications with both apps installed, turn off notifications in classic Hangouts.
If you only use Google Chat, you can delete the classic Hangouts app. Your existing and new conversations from classic Hangouts appear in the Google Chat app. When you remove the classic Hangouts app from your mobile device, duplicate notifications should stop.
Use a different app for text messages
If you use classic Hangouts for text messages, use another text messaging app. Switch from classic Hangouts to a new text message app.
Use a different app for video calls
If you use classic Hangouts for video calls, you can use Google Meet in Google Chat. Start a video meeting from Chat or Gmail.
