Turn Google Chat notifications on or off

Notifications appear on the devices that you used most recently. If you’re not active in Chat, notifications appear on all devices that are signed in to your Google Account. 

You automatically get notifications when you:

  • Create or respond to a message.
  • Are @mentioned in a message or room.

You can turn off automatic notifications or customise your notifications by:

  • Device
  • Conversation
  • Room
  • Thread

If you haven't read a message in over 12 hours, you get an email reminder. Email reminders aren’t sent for @mentions.

Customise notifications in Chat
  1. Open chat.google.com or the Chat standalone desktop app.
  2. At the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  3. To turn on notifications for Chat messages, under 'Desktop notifications', tick the box next to 'Allow chat notifications'.
  4. Optional: To play a sound for incoming chat notifications, tick the box next to Play notification sounds.
  5. Optional: To turn email notifications for unread messages on or off, under Email notifications, select Only @mentions and direct messages or Off.
Customise notifications in Gmail
  1. Open your Gmail account. 
  2. In the top right, click Settings Settingsand then See all settings.
  3. On the top, click Chat and Meet and then Manage Chat settings.
  4. To customise notifications, under 'Desktop notifications', click the down arrow Drop-down arrow and then choose an option:
    • All messages: For all direct messages and messages in rooms.
    • New threads, threads that I’m following and direct messages: For all direct messages, the first message of every new thread and all threads that you follow.
    • Threads that I’m following and direct messages: For all direct messages and threads that you follow.
    • Only @mentions and direct messages: For direct messages and @mentions in rooms. 
    • Optional: To receive incoming messages as pop-up windows in Gmail, tick the box next to Open chat pop-ups for new messages.
    • Optional: To play a sound for incoming chat notifications, tick the box next to 'Play notification sounds'.
    • Optional: To customise email notifications for unread messages, under 'Email notifications', select Only @mentions and direct messages or Off.
  5. To turn off all notifications, click Off.
Customise notifications in a specific room or group conversation
  1. Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account.
  2. Select the conversation participants or room name.
  3. At the top, next to the conversation participants or room name, click the down arrow Down arrow or More options Moreand then Notifications.
  4. Choose an option:
    • Notify always: Get push notifications and a notification dot for all new messages.
    • Notify less: Get push notifications and a notification dot when you’re @mentioned, when a thread that you follow gets a new message or if someone in the conversation uses '@all'. 
      • For rooms with threads: To receive a notification when someone starts a new thread, tick the box next to 'Also notify for the first message of new threads'. 
    • Notifications off: You won’t get any push notifications, but @mentions and @all will continue to get a notification dot.

Tip: Even if you turn off notifications, you'll still get a red notification dot for @mentions and direct messages. 

Customise notifications for a specific 1:1 message 

  1. Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account.
  2. On the left menu, click on the person's name to open the conversation.
  3. In the window that appears, click More options More and then Turn off notifications or Turn on notifications.
Customise notifications for a specific thread in a room

When you follow a thread, the number of new messages appears next to the message or room. You automatically follow threads that you start, reply to or are @mentioned in.

Important: This option is only available if you have selected the 'Notify less' notification setting.

  1. Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account.
  2. Open a conversation or room.
  3.  Point to the thread.
  4. At the top right, click Follow.

Tips: 

  • To unfollow a thread and stop notifications, next to the thread, click Following.
  • Even if you turn off notifications, you still get a red notification dot for @mentions and direct messages.

Where notifications appear 

When the Chat mobile app is open, notifications appear there. Notifications don’t appear:
