Improve your Chat messages with Refine

To improve the clarity and tone of your message before you send it, use Refine to edit your message in Google Chat.

Important: This feature requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. Learn about Gemini features and plans.

You can use Refine in English only. If your draft text isn’t in English, you receive an error message.

Refine your message

On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
Compose a message in Chat.
Click Formatting options .
- Or, you can highlight the text you want to refine.
Click Refine .
- Above the Compose area, a refined version of your message displays.
To replace your original text with the refined version, click Replace.

On your computer, open Gmail.
At the top right, click Settings See all settings.
Under the “General” tab, in the “Google Workspace smart features” section, click Manage Workspace smart features settings.
Turn on Smart features in Google Workspace.
At the bottom, click Save.
