Negative keywords can help focus your campaigns on what your customers are actually searching for or interested in.

This article shows you how to add negative keywords to your ad groups or campaigns.

Before you begin

If you’re new to negative keywords, learn more About negative keywords.

Choose the AdWords experience you're using. Learn more

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account.
  2. From the page menu on the left, click Keywords.
  3. Click Negative keywords at the top.
  4. Click the plus button .
  5. Choose to add negative keywords to your “Campaign” or “Ad group” from the drop-down, and select the specific campaign or ad group you’d like.
  6. Enter or paste one negative keyword per line in the text field. If you’re adding negative keywords to a search campaign, you can also choose a match type. For Display and Video campaigns, all negative keywords will be added as exact match, and you won't be able to change the match type.

    • To add broad match negative keywords, you'll need to add the synonyms, singular version, plural version, and other variations such as cup, glass and glasses
    • To add a negative phrase match keyword, surround the term with quotation marks—for example, “wine bottle”
    • To add a negative exact match keyword, surround the term with brackets—for example, [bottle opener]
  7. Click Save.

Keep in mind

Consider negative keywords that are right for you and help focus your campaign. Make sure that your negative keywords don't overlap with your regular keywords, because this will cause your ad not to show.
