Account security tips

Here at Google, we take your safety and security very seriously. Keeping your data safe and secure is one of our top priorities. While we keep an eye out for any suspicious activity, there are many things you can do to make your AdWords account more secure. We'll give you some security tips, split up into two categories:

  • Security tips for all AdWords users
  • Security tips for accounts with multiple users

Security tips for all AdWords users

  1. Check for unauthorized changes
  2. It's a good idea to regularly log into your AdWords account to check for any unexpected or unauthorized activity, like changes to your ads or budget. If you think someone may have accessed your billing information, you should check your bank or credit card statements for any unauthorized activity, too. Report unauthorized AdWords activity »

  3. Scan your computer for malware
  4. Make sure that you have up-to-date antivirus protection on your computer and run a full system scan. Criminals can steal your personal information by spreading malware onto your system, so running a full system scan on a regular basis can help ensure your system is free of malware.   5. Choose strong, unique passwords and update them regularly
  6. We recommend updating your password regularly, at least twice a year. A good password contains a combination of numbers, characters, and case-sensitive letters, so it can't be guessed easily. Don't use the same password for different websites. Otherwise, hackers may be able to access your other online accounts. Update your password »

  7. Enable 2-step verification
  8. 2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your Google Account by requiring you to have access to your phone, as well as your username and password, when you sign in. This means that even if someone steals or guesses your password, they won't be able to sign into your account unless they also have access to your phone. Get started with 2-step verification »

Security tips for accounts with multiple users

  1. Create individual user profiles for each person using your account
  2. Sharing is usually a good thing, but not when it comes to usernames and passwords. If multiple people need to use your AdWords account, don't just share the same username and password. Instead, create new user profiles for your AdWords account by selecting the Account settings option in the gear menu, and clicking Account access. Invite users to your account »

  3. Grant the lowest access needed for each user
  4. When creating new user profiles, you can set different access levels for each profile. For example, users with administrative access can invite new users into the account, but users with standard access can't. There's also read only access and email only access for users who don't need to make changes to your account. Learn about access levels »

  5. Disable any inactive users, like former employees
  6. If people leave your company or no longer work with AdWords, you should disable those inactive users. Otherwise, they'll still be able to log into your account and possibly make changes without your knowledge.
