Optimization tips for AdMob

Below are some tips that can help you optimize your ads and get the most out of AdMob.

1. Use the right ad format for the right reasons

Each ad format has its strengths and best uses. Learn more about each ad format below.

Why should I choose this ad format?

Banner is a basic ad format that appear at the top and bottom of the screen and can be automatically refreshed. They work well with a lot of apps and don't take up much space.

They're a good format for messaging apps because users spend large quantities of time on their menu, contacts, and messaging pages, making it easier for users to interact with ads and drive higher engagement from anchored banner units.

Focus on user experience. Rewarded ads offer users the choice to interact with an ad by watching a video, playing a game, or answering a survey in exchange for an in-app reward, like a new life in a game. To do this successfully, this experience needs to complement rather than interrupt a user’s flow. With intuitive user prompts and clear options to opt-out, our rewarded ad format puts your user in control of their in-app experience.

2. Enable all ad types

Your earnings could increase if you allow all ad types to display. By enabling all ad types, more advertisers can bid on your app’s inventory and help increase your average revenue per thousand impressions (RPM). Limiting ad types may result in decreased revenue.

For interstitials, you can enable text, image and video ad types. For banners, you can enable text and image.

  1. Click Apps in the sidebar.
  2. Select the name of the app associated with the ad unit you want to edit. Note: If you don't see it in the list of recent apps, you can click All apps, then click the name of the app.
  3. Click Ad units in the sidebar.
  4. Click the name of the ad unit.
  5. Check all of the Ad type checkboxes.

  6. Click Save, and repeat these steps for your other apps.

3. Minimize category blocking

By allowing all ad categories to appear, you could potentially improve your earnings because more advertisers can bid on your app’s inventory, and help improve your average RPM. If you need to, you can disable specific subcategories without over blocking.

To minimize blocking, head to the “Blocking controls” tab in your AdMob account and switch the categories to “Allowed.”
