Create an ad tag for DAI

Once you've set up video inventory for Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI), you can generate an ad tag. The tag generation process is generally the same as any other video ad tag. However, some tag modifications need to be made to ensure compatibility with either a live linear stream or for video on demand (VOD) content.

When you generate an ad tag, you have the option to select an existing ad unit, or to create a new ad unit. It is strongly recommended that you create unique ad units for DAI. This gives you the flexibility to assign specific creatives to specific DAI inventory and allows you to run reports exclusively on DAI delivery.

Generate the ad tag

  1. Locate and select your DAI ad unit from the Inventory tab and click Generate tags.
  2. Complete the steps to generate a video ad tag and ensure the following when you select your tag options:

    • Select Enable for live traffic if this tag runs ads on a live event. This step is not necessary for VOD.

    • Select inventory sizes for video only. These are designated by a "v" in the unit size (for example, 640x480v).

  3. Copy the tag from the "Video units" field and click Done.

Modify the ad tag

Whether the inventory is for a live linear stream or a VOD content source, the ad tag needs to be modified and saved to the correct location. Depending on your execution, make the modifications below.

Your video player or app can change the parameters of the ad tag when it requests ads for individual user streams, but the tag specified in DFP needs to conform to the below.

Learn how to supply targeting parameters to your stream.

Live linear

  • Ensure that /live exists in the ad tag URL before /ads. For example: https://.../gampad/live/ads?

If you selected "Enable for live traffic" when you generated the tag, this should already exist. If not, you can manually add this to the tag.

  • Ensure that the output parameter is set to output=vast.
  • Add the ad_rule parameter to your tag and set to ad_rule=0.

  • (Optional) You can control which creatives are eligible to serve based on a configuration set up in a video creative profile by adding the pp parameter and associated profile name.

Video on demand

  • Add the cmsid and vid parameters and assign them to their macros. It should look like this: &cmsid=%%CMS_ID%%&vid=%%VIDEO_ID%%.
  • Ensure that the output parameter is set to output=vmap.
  • (Optional) You can control which creatives are eligible to serve based on a configuration set up in a video creative profile by adding the pp parameter and associated profile name.
