Create an ad tag for DAI

Once you've set up video inventory for Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI), you can generate an ad tag. The tag generation process is generally the same as any other video ad tag. However, some tag modifications need to be made to ensure compatibility with either a live linear stream or for video on demand (VOD) content.

When you generate an ad tag, you have the option to select an existing or create a new ad unit. It's strongly recommended that you create unique ad units for DAI, which allows you to assign specific creatives to specific DAI inventory and run reports exclusively on DAI delivery.

Dynamic Ad Insertion requires the use of optimized pods. Standard pods are not supported.

Generate the ad tag

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Click Inventory and then Ad units.
  3. Locate and select your DAI ad unit.
  4. Click Tags.
  5. Select "Google Publisher Tag for Video" and click Continue.
  6. Complete the steps to generate a video ad tag and ensure the following when you select your tag options:

    • Enable for "Live traffic" if this tag runs ads on a live event. This step is not necessary for VOD.

    • Select inventory sizes for video only. These are designated by a "v" in the unit size (for example, 640x480v).

  7. Click Copy tag.

Modify the ad tag

Whether the inventory is for a live linear stream or a VOD content source, the ad tag needs to be modified and saved to the correct location. Depending on your execution, make the modifications below.

Your video player or app can change the parameters of the ad tag when it requests ads for individual user streams, but the tag specified in Ad Manager needs to conform to the below.

Learn how to supply targeting parameters to your stream.

Live linear ad tags

  • Must use https://
  • GPT tags must use the URL and path: https://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/live/ads
  • Must set a value for the sz and iu parameters

  • Must set the following parameters to the following values: impl=s, env=vp, gdfp_req=1, unviewed_position_start=1, ad_rule=0
  • (Optional) You can control which creatives are eligible to serve based on a configuration set up in a video creative profile by adding the pp parameter and associated profile name.

Video on demand ad tags
