Change the phone number on your account & how it's used

You can add, update, or remove phone numbers on your Google Account. Phone numbers are used for different reasons, and you have controls to manage how your numbers are used.

Important: It may take a week before you can use your new phone number to verify it's you for sensitive actions like changing your password.

Add, update, or remove phone number

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. Under "Contact info," tap Phone.
  4. From here, you can:
    • Add a phone number: Under "Your phone numbers," select Add recovery phone. (We recommend that you add a recovery phone number if you haven't already.)
    • Change your phone number: Next to your number, tap Edit Editand then Update number.
    • Delete your phone number: Next to your number, tap Delete Deleteand then Remove number.
  5. Follow the steps on the screen.

Note: Changing the number in your Google Account only affects some Google services. Find out how to change your number for other Google services.

How phone numbers are used

As part of some Google services

Your phone number is connected to certain Google services that you've set up or used.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. In the "Contact info" section, tap Phone.
  4. Under your phone number, next to "Usage," you'll see some services that use your phone number. To learn more or make changes, tap the service.

Other Google services that use phone numbers might not be listed on that page. You can change your number in certain services' settings, like the ones below:

To see your options for a certain service, go to its settings. If you need help, visit support.google.com.

You can change who sees your phone number:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. Under "Choose what others see," tap Go to About me.
  4. Under "Personal contact info," change your sharing preference.

Better personalize ads you see

If "Ads Personalization" is turned on, your phone number might be used to make the ads you see more relevant to you. For example, if you use your phone number for a loyalty program, you might see related ads while using Google Search.

Check if your number is used for ads

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. In the "Contact info" section, tap Phone.
  4. Next to "Usage," look for "Ads Personalization."

Stop using your number for ads

You can keep "Ads Personalization" on for your Google Account, but stop your number from being used to tailor ads.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. In the "Contact info" section, tap Phone.
  4. Next to your number, select Delete Deleteand then Remove number.
  5. At the top left, tap Back Back.
  6. At the top, tap Security.
  7. Under "Ways we can verify it's you," tap Recovery phone. Follow the steps on the screen to re-add your number.
  8. To keep using your number in other Google services, go to those services and re-add it.

Turn off personalized ads

To start or stop getting personalized ads, change your Ads Settings. If "Ads Personalization" is off, your number won't be used to tailor ads.

Improve your experience across Google

If "Across Google" is listed on your "Phone" page, this number can be used across Google services.

Check if your number is used this way

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. In the "Contact info" section, tap Phone.
  4. Next to "Usage," look for "Across Google."

Stop using your number across Google

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device's Settings app and then Google and then Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. In the "Contact info" section, tap Phone.
  4. Next to your number, select Delete Deleteand then Remove number.
  5. At the top left, tap Back Back.
  6. At the top, tap Security.
  7. Under "Ways we can verify it's you," tap Recovery phone. Follow the steps on the screen to re-add your number.
  8. To keep using your number in other Google services, go to those services and re-add it.
Verify your Android phone's number

When you set up a Google Account, you can let Google know your phone's number. If you do, we'll verify that the number is yours, and we'll try to re-verify it from time to time to make sure that it's still yours. Learn more about verifying your number.
