Understand Groups policies and limits

These limits apply to all G Suite editions. Limits for trial accounts are lower.

As a security measure, Google Groups for Business limits message activity, group size, invitations, and membership. If you reach one of the limits, your activity is temporarily restricted. The restriction typically lasts an hour, but can last as long as 24 hours.

The value of these limits can change without notice to protect Google's infrastructure.

Message limits

All recipient counts refer to the total number of recipients, not the total number of unique recipients. For example, if one of the group members is another group consisting of two users, it counts as three recipients (the group and its two members).

Type Description Limit
Total recipients per group Maximum total recipients a single group can send to 6,200,000 per hour
Total external recipients per group Maximum number of external recipients* a single group can send to 50,000 per day. Not available during free trials
Total external recipients per domain Maximum number of external recipients* all groups in your domain can send to** 100,000 per day. Not available during free trials
Total inbound emails per group Maximum number of emails a group can accept 300 per 5 minutes
Total message size Maximum total gigabytes (GB) a single group can send 2.4 GB per hour
Total messages per sender to any one specific group Maximum number of messages any one sender can send to any one specific group 1,800 per hour
Total messages per internal sender, across all groups in your domain Maximum number of messages from a single internal sender to all groups within your domain** 18,000 per hour
Total messages per external sender, across all groups in your domain Maximum number of messages from a single external sender to all groups within your domain** 1,800 per hour. Not available during free trials
Forwarding and Cc limit for Collaborative inbox groups Messages forwarded or Cc'd from Collaborative inboxes 25 email addresses per message

* External recipients are recipients that are outside of your G Suite account. For customer accounts with multiple domains, recipients in all associated domains count as internal recipients. The limit on external recipients increases with the size of the G Suite account, and messages can't be sent to external recipients during free trials.

** Limit is computed as an aggregate total, across all groups in your domain.

Group invitations and size

Group invitation and size limits only apply to actions performed in the Groups web interface. Domain administrators can add more members to a group using the Google Admin console or the G Suite Admin SDK Directory API.

Note: Limits for G Suite trial users are lower and additional limits apply.

Type Description Limit
Joins per day Maximum number of groups a single user can join in a day 30 per day
Creations per week Maximum number of groups a single user can create in a week 5 per week
External member additions at one time Maximum number of external members that can be added at one time using web interface 10 per session

External member invitations per day, per group Maximum number of external members that can be invited to a single group in a day 500 per day, per group

* External recipients are recipients that are outside of your domain. Messages can't be sent to external recipients during free trials.

Membership

If you are the owner or manager of a group, it counts as two memberships, one as a group member and one as the owner or manager. A user is an indirect member of a group if they belong to a different group that's nested in the group.

Type Description Limit
Direct membership Maximum number of groups a user can be a direct member of

Note: This limitation also applies to Groups. That is, a Group can be a member of 2,000 Groups directly.

2,000

Limits related to multiple domains
If a topic is posted to the wrong group, you can move it to any other group in your domain. However, you can't move topics from a group in one domain to a group in a different domain. Learn more about moving topics between groups.
Limits related to trial accounts

If you are using Google Groups through a free trial account, you can only send group email to recipients inside your organization. To send group email to external recipients, you must end your trial and convert to a paid account as described below.

At the end of your free trial period, those limits will be automatically increased when your domain is cumulatively billed for at least USD $30 (or equivalent). If you purchased your domain from Google, the amount required to increase your sending limits is USD $30 plus the cost of your domain.

Important: Sending limits are not increased during your trial period. Your account must have started a subscription and ended the trial period before sending limits can be increased. In addition, any payments made during the trial period do not apply to the USD $30 (or equivalent) charge to remove trial-like limits.

To increase your limits sooner, you can end your free trial and convert to a paid account by completing the following steps:

  1. Add new users to reach the maximum account user limit (normally 10 for new accounts in trial, although it can vary under certain conditions).
  2. Set up a billing account
  3. Select the option to start the paid service.
  4. Make a payment to lift the trial limits.

It can take up to 48 hours to upgrade the limits after you submit payment.
