Migrate data from Exchange

G Suite Migration for Microsoft Exchange

If you've set up your organization to use G Suite, you can migrate users' email, calendar, and contact data from your Microsoft® Exchange environment to G Suite using G Suite Migration for Microsoft Exchange (GSMME).

Step 1: Before you begin

  • System requirements—Check that you meet the system requirements for GSMME.
  • User accounts—Create a CSV file of the user accounts you are migrating to make sure your legacy data correctly maps to your new G Suite user accounts. The format of the control CSV file depends on the system from which you are migrating. Learn more about creating a control CSV file for user accounts.
  • Calendar resources—If you are migrating calendar resources, you should also create a mapping CSV file.

Step 2: Authorize GSMME for your account

Before you can install GSMME, you must authorize the software for your account. For details, see Authorize GSMME for your account.

Step 3: Download and install GSMME

  1. Download the MSI file from the GSMME download page.
  2. Open the installer and follow the instructions to install GSMME.

Step 4: Configure GSMME

Complete these steps in the GSMME tool.

Step 1: Server details
  1. For Server Type, select Exchange.
  2. In the Hostname/IP Address field, enter your domain name or the IP address of the email server from which you want to migrate data. For example: smtp.company.com or 198.102.434.8.
  3. In the Admin username field, enter the username for the Exchange administrator account you want to use to open your users' mail stores.
  4. Calendar resources: If you are migrating calendar resources, do the following:
    1. To avoid migration errors, use a separate G Suite admin account for each GSMME instance.
    2. Change the number of parallel migrations in GSMME from 25 (default) to 1.

For more information on migrating calendar resources, see the "Best practices" chapter in the GSMME Admin Guide.

  5. Click Next.
Step 2: User and domain information
  1. In the G Suite domain name field, enter the new primary G Suite domain where the data will be migrated.
  2. In the Service account credentials file field, enter the path to the JSON credentials file created as part of the authorization process.
  3. In the G Suite admin user field, enter the full email address of your G Suite domain super administrator.
  4. Click Next.
Step 3: Migration settings
  1. Select the checkbox for each type of data you want to migrate: email, calendar, contacts, or public folders.
  2. In the File of accounts to migrate field, enter the path to the CSV file of user accounts you are migrating.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Review the settings and optionally make changes.
  5. Select your migration actions:
    • Migrate all data—Only use this option if you are migrating an account again.
    • Save settings—When checked, GSMME retains the current configuration for future use.
    • Run Diagnostics—When checked, GSMME verifies the configuration before running the migration.
    • Estimate—When checked, GSMME estimates the message count for the source users.
    • Migrate—When checked, GSMME performs the migration.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the dialog box that appears, enter the username and password for the Exchange administrator account you are using to open your users' mail stores.

Tip: Selecting Remember my password will bypass this step in future migrations.

  8. Click Start to begin the migration process.

To learn more about GSMME, see the GSMME Admin Guide, which includes detailed information about how GSMME works, getting started, and running your migration.
