Rename a user
You can change a user's display name—the first and last name that appears in mail messages they send, calendar guest lists, and other Google services. Or you can change their username, which appears before the @ sign in their primary email address and the name they use to sign in to their account. Note that an administrator has to make these changes in the Admin console; users can't do so themselves.
The effect of changing a user's display name depends on whether the user has a Google+ profile. If the user has a Google+ profile, Google services such as Gmail show his or her profile name rather than the display name defined in the Admin console. If the user doesn't have a Google+ profile, Google services show their Admin console display name.
To change a user's display or username:
- Ask the the user to sign out of his or her Google for Work account.
- Sign in to the Google Admin console.
- From the Home page, click Users.
- Click in the user list for the user you want to change and choose Rename user.
Or from the user's account page, click in the corner of the user's profile and choose Rename user.
- Enter the new name for the user.
You can change the user's display name (First name and Last name) as well as his or her Primary email address. If your Google account includes multiple domains, select the appropriate domain name from the list.
- Click Rename User.
It can take up to 10 minutes for a new primary email address to be reflected throughout the system, 24 hours for domain and personal contact changes to take effect, and up to 3 days before the user can use Google Talk. See Impact of changing a username for a complete description.
