Number porting requirements for Google Voice

If your organization has existing phone numbers with another service provider, you can port (or move) those numbers to Google Voice. 

Step 1: Before you begin

  • With your existing provider, verify: 
    • The porting out requirements
    • If you need an account number for authorization
    • There are no holds on the numbers being ported
  • Don't cancel your existing service or Voice until Voice notifies you that the number port is complete. Otherwise, the port request will not succeed and the number might get lost.
  • Cancel any open service requests with your current provider.
  • All numbers in a request must belong to the same service provider. If you use multiple service providers, create a separate port request for each provider.

Step 2: Gather information

  • Find a recent copy of a billing statement from your current service provider for information to complete your port request.
  • Get a list of the phone numbers that you're porting. Make sure your service provider has unlocked the numbers.
  • If your current provider requires a PIN for number porting, have the PIN ready when you create the port order.
  • Make sure all numbers in your port request are associated with the main billing phone number on the service provider account that you're porting from.
  • Remove any special features with existing numbers, such as DSL internet or hunt groups. Voice does not support these features.
  • Check the Service provider fields section for details on region-specific info required for number porting.

Step 3: Review limits on porting

You can port up to a maximum of 1,000 numbers (50 in Canada) at a time.

You can't port these numbers:

  • Toll-free numbers
  • Nongeographical (nomadic) numbers in the EU
  • Mobile numbers in the EU
  • Numbers associated with Gmail.com consumer accounts
  • Numbers from unmanaged accounts to managed accounts. For more information, go to About Google Voice account types.
  • Numbers in different Google Workspace domains
    Note: If both domains are within the same Workspace account, you can unassign a number from a user in one domain and reassign it to a user in another domain in the Google Admin console. In this case, both domain users must have Voice licenses assigned.
  • Numbers outside the Voice coverage area, even if in a supported country or region.

Contact the service provider who provisioned your numbers to ensure there are no regulations or service requirements that would prevent you from porting them.

Some service providers might not allow porting individual numbers in a certain range. We recommend that numbers belonging to a range be ported together in the same request. Additional numbers outside a number range can be ported in the same request with the exception of German numbers.
