YouTube Android App Update

Hi everyone,

We’re introducing an improved look for the YouTube Android app. The update provides a consistent layout across mobile and allows for easier navigation within the app. These changes are largely the result of feedback from all of you thanks for continuing to let us know how we can improve!

Key Updates:

  • Navigation tabs are clearly labeled. It’s also easier to reach the tabs with your thumb as they’re now along the bottom.

  • “Account” and “Library” have been separated to make it simpler to find what you’re looking for. Your videos (e.g. playlists, watch history, uploads) are in “Library,” while your Account and Settings are located from the profile icon at the top.

  • The navigation bars are visible on all pages (except for Watch), so you can quickly navigate to one of the main navigation tabs.

  • The app remembers where you left off on each tab. For example, if you scroll down through the Home feed, then go to your Subscriptions tab, and then return to Home, you can easily pick up where you left off.

This design is already available on iOS and is slowly rolling out to Android.  If you don’t have the new design yet, you will soon!

Let us know what you think below,

Marissa

I liked the old design of the Android app much more than this new one. It's way too much like the iOS app. They should have different designs. The old Android design fit Android, with nice material design icons. iOS doesn't have much material design, so its app fits it more. I would like it a lot if you reverted this new design.

Do Google designers use Android apps? I'm starting to wonder whether they didn't know we could swipe left and right and never had to reach to the top of the screen.

Also, just one bit of feedback (I know you won't listen to how bad the bottom nav is so I won't go on about it), that account screen is really annoying. It slides from the bottom when I tap something at to top of the screen. And the navigation inside it is very confusing with the system back button not taking me back to the "account" screen.
So: home screen -> tap on account -> tap on settings (things fly in and out weirdly) -> wait that's not what I wanted, tap back button* -> I'm on the home screen now? What?

*: this also happens if I hit the "up" button instead of system "back". Honestly.... Honestly Google... You tested this for a year and this is what you came up with?

No swiping between tabs? This is a step backward. I've shown this new UI to several people at home and my office (we're a software company), and I hear audible groans and genuine sadness to see the swiping taken away. That's how we navigate between panes!

Everything in Android has taught us to swipe - please add swiping back in!

I have the feeling Google is trying to revert back to mostly bottom navigation on it's design.

Back in the days of Gingerbread and before we had mostly bottom navigation. Android had a dedicated menu button that was on the bottom and the Action Bar wasn't a thing. Since then the Action Bar with it's menu, the removal of hardware menu buttons and side navigation panels started moving navigation to the top but the Android dedicated back and home button always kept our thumbs moving up and down when navigating.

So if this new YouTube design is a test to see what is like to have all bottom navigation again I'm all for it - redesign Android to have mostly bottom navigation again and save our thumbs from having to move so much specially with the phablet format becoming more and more common. But we need to at least keep the good features like swipe sideways to switch tabs.

What's wrong with you people, I'm sure no majority asked for you people to remove swipe gesture. It was really easy than these clicks of olden day criteria used currently and by the way it no where looks material design. I really hope you guys would bring back the swipe at least.
