Helping creators better protect their content on YouTube
1
Hi all,

Ensuring creators have access to best-in-class tools to manage their content has always been a top priority for YouTube. Over the years, we’ve built a variety of copyright management tools (like Content ID, the copyright webform, etc) to meet the needs of various types of copyright owners. Most recently, we launched the Copyright Match Tool which was designed especially for creators who run into issues with unauthorized re-uploads, to help them better protect their content. We’ve since expanded the tool to over 1 million creators.

We’re always looking for ways to safely expand access to these tools and help copyright owners better manage unauthorized reuploads of their content. That’s why we’re announcing some important updates and improvements to our copyright management tools to better help creators protect their content on YouTube:
  • We’re improving the copyright takedown form’s effectiveness by allowing creators to prevent future copies of videos they’ve already removed through the copyright takedown process from being reuploaded.
  • We’re also expanding access to the Copyright Match Tool to any creator who removes content with a valid copyright takedown request by showing them potential copies to content they removed.

New feature in the copyright takedown form to prevent reuploads

We’re excited to announce a new feature in the copyright takedown form that gives creators the option to prevent copies of videos, successfully taken down through the copyright takedown process, from being reuploaded to YouTube.

Here’s how it works:

When you submit a takedown for a video using the copyright takedown webform, you’ll have the option to “prevent copies of these videos from appearing on YouTube going forward”. If you select this option, YouTube will try to identify copies of those videos and will automatically remove them before they’re uploaded. Before selecting the “Prevent copies” option, you need to make sure you own exclusive worldwide rights to the content for which you’re reporting in your takedown.

  • In some cases, if a video cannot be automatically removed, but our system determines it may still be a potential copy, we’ll surface the video to you in the Copyright Match Tool. From there, you’ll be able to review the potential copy to determine what action to take. This can include actions such as messaging the uploader or submitting a new takedown request.

  • Important Note: Takedowns are reviewed to make sure they are valid and complete and comply with YouTube’s copyright policies. Before submitting a copyright takedown request, make sure to check if the content might be protected by an exception to copyright, such as fair use or fair dealing. Misuse of the copyright takedown process may result in the termination of your account.

Expanding access to the Copyright Match Tool

Previously, the Copyright Match Tool was only available to creators in the YouTube Partner Program and those who also showed a need to find unauthorized reuploads of their original videos on YouTube. Over the coming months, we’ll start to expand access to the Copyright Match Tool to any creator that issues a valid takedown request and will surface reuploads of videos they’ve taken down.

We’re starting to roll out these updates to a subset of creators and we’ll be carefully monitoring usage as we continue to expand over the coming months.

To learn more about these updates, read through our Help Center article here or check out the video on our YouTube Creators channel for more info.

What does it mean "you need to make sure you own exclusive worldwide rights to the videos you’re reporting in your takedown."?
Does it mean you cannot prevent reuploading videos made of your content used illegally but with some additional edits of content you don't own?
