Breaking news and top news on YouTube

Informational panel providing breaking news context

An information panel providing breaking news context may appear when there is a significant news event. When there is news of this nature, we may provide text-based snippets from an article by a verified news source while the story is still developing. The information panel will also link directly to the website so that viewers can easily access and read the full article about the news event. As videos become available, you may see a shelf of content related to the breaking news event from news sources on the homepage and in top search results.

Breaking News shelf on the homepage

A Breaking News shelf appears on the YouTube homepage, except for users under 18. When there is a significant news event, the breaking news shelf on the homepage can be found by scrolling down the YouTube homepage. The breaking news shelf on the homepage is dismissible if a user is not interested.

Note: This is different from the information panel providing breaking news context in search results, as the information panel will only include text-based snippets from a news article, while the content on the homepage will include YouTube videos when available.

Top News shelf in Search

A Top News shelf in search surfaces if a user issues a news-seeking query for which we have relevant content from verified news sources. The Top News shelf will appear for all users irrespective of age.

Note: The channels featured on the Breaking News shelf on the homepage and the Top News shelf in search only include news sites that have been included in the Google News corpus. If a partner would like to have their channel or site considered, they can find more guidelines here.
