Assign a device owner to a managed Android device
If you have a company-owned Android 5.1 Lollipop or later device, you might be prompted to assign device ownership to your organization so that your administrator has full control of your device. (Alternatively, your administrator can import devices by serial number, which assigns ownership automatically, before giving you the device.) Your administrator can monitor and manage settings, corporate access, apps, permissions, and data. They can also manage apps so that you can only install whitelisted apps on your device.
You can only assign device ownership to your organization during initial device setup. If you want to assign device ownership on a device that’s already in use, you need to reset it to factory settings first.
To assign device ownership for G Suite for Education domains, you must be an existing Google Play for Education customer. See Manage tablets and infrastructure for more information. If you haven’t already signed up for Google Play for Education, see this service update.
If your company is using a third-party enterprise mobility management (EMM) provider, contact your administrator for more information about setting up your Android 5.1 or later device as a work managed device.
If G Suite is your EMM provider, you can set up your Android 6.0 or later device and assign device ownership by following these steps:
- Turn on your device and follow the on-screen instructions to:
- Choose your language.
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network.
- Sign in with your G Suite account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Google Apps Device Policy.
- You might see a note on the screen that the device will be managed and kept secure by your organization. Tap Next to assign ownership of the device to your company and continue the setup process. If you own the device personally, you can check the I own this device box to opt out. (If the administrator has marked this device as a company-owned device, then the ownership will be automatically assigned to the company, and you will not be able to opt-out.)
- Tap Encrypt to start encrypting your device.
- Tap Encrypt Phone or Encrypt Tablet to encrypt your accounts, settings, downloaded apps and their data, media, and other files.
Note: You need a charged battery to get through the encryption process so keep your device plugged in during the process.
- Tap Encrypt Phone or Encrypt Tablet to confirm that you want to encrypt your device.
- To start setting up the Device Policy app to manage your device, tap Set Up.
- To allow your administrator to monitor and manage settings, corporate access, apps and so on, tap OK.
- (Optional) If your administrator requires that they need to approve your device, you’ll see a note on the Status screen in the Device Policy app that your device is pending approval. You’ll receive a notification on your device when your administrator approves it.
After you set up your device with your organization assigned as device owner, all your G Suite data (mail, calendar, contacts, and so on) will start syncing to the device.
- In the Device Policy app, open the Policies screen to verify that your device complies with the policies set by your administrator and resolve them if needed. For example, you might need to set a device password.
After you set up your device, you can go to the managed Google Play store and install work apps that you need.
Note: On some devices, it can take up to an hour for whitelisted apps to appear in the managed Play Store.
