Does having hyphens in domain names affect seo and ranking?

Does having hyphens in a domain affect its ranking? There's a lot of speculation on this but no official word: some say it doesn't matter, while others say that hypens are usually used by spam sites, so search engines like google automatically lower their ranking.

I'm mainly asking because my own domain has hyphens in it: h-y-p-h-e-n.com, and I'd like to know if the name itself will affect my site's Google rank.

You might want to check out the Webmaster Help Forum and Webmaster Help Center.  This topic comes up regularly over there.  If you don't find what you are looking for, please post in that forum so that others more familiar with the issue will be available to you.

I haven checked those places before posting. And like I mentioned in my original topic, there's a lot of speculation on the subject, but nowhere could I find an official reply from Google.

If there is an official reply from Google, the folks in the Webmaster Help Forum will be more likely to be able to point you in that direction, than anyone over here will be.

Levels

Member levels indicate a user's level of participation in a forum. The greater the participation, the higher the level. Everyone starts at level 1 and can rise to level 10. These activities can increase your level in a forum:

  • Post an answer.
  • Having your answer selected as the best answer.
  • Having your post rated as helpful.
  • Vote up a post.
  • Correctly mark a topic or post as abuse.

Having a post marked and removed as abuse will slow a user's advance in levels.
