Block adult sites on Google at your school, workplace, or home

If you’re managing a school, workplace, or home network, you can prevent most adult content from showing up in search results by turning on the SafeSearch setting.

If you want to avoid adult content in your own search results, learn about SafeSearch for individual accounts.

Keep SafeSearch turned on for your network

This option is recommended if you have a technical background.

About SafeSearch Virtual IP address (VIP)

SafeSearch VIP will force all users on your network to use SafeSearch on Google Search while still allowing a secure connection via HTTPS. The VIP in SafeSearch VIP refers to a Virtual IP, which is an IP address that can be routed internally to multiple Google servers.

When SafeSearch VIP is turned on, teachers and students at your school will see a notification the first time they go to Google. This lets them know that SafeSearch is on.

Note: Using SafeSearch VIP will not affect other Google services outside of Google Search.

Turn on SafeSearch VIP

To force SafeSearch for your network, you’ll need to update your DNS configuration. Set the DNS entry for (and any other Google ccTLD country subdomains your users may use) to be a CNAME for

We will serve SafeSearch results for all requests that we receive on this VIP. That includes things like Google search, image search, and video search.

Keep SafeSearch turned on for your browser

When SafeSearch is locked, most adult content is blocked from search results for anyone who uses that browser.

To lock SafeSearch, a teacher or administrator needs to change the SafeSearch setting on each computer, browser, and browser profile.

  1. Go to Search Settings.
  2. Under "SafeSearch filters," select Lock SafeSearch. You might be asked to sign in.
  3. Select Lock SafeSearch. You’ll see a confirmation page once the lock is turned on.

Note: If your school is using Chrome browsers or Chromebooks, use SafeSearch with Chrome User Policies.

Report adult content in search results

If you have SafeSearch turned on but your search results still contain adult content, you can report the offensive content.
