Geotargetting & .CM Domains Questions1 Recommended Answer
I have a few questions about country code domains and geotargeting in webmaster tools. I understand that geotargeting is available in webmaster tools for TLD's only, but am unsure of how much weight country code domains pull on their own.
I had grabbed a few .cm domains with the intention of developing sites on them, but now I am wondering if I even stand a chance of ranking in Google in my area (USA). Would the country code domain prevent me from ranking in the main Google or is there something else I can do to let Google know that these pages are not strictly for Cameroon?
I was wondering if Google was considering offering the ability to adjust geotargeting for .cm domains like they do with .tv & .me?
Thanks in advance!
Thank you very much for the thoughtful answer. That is what I am afraid of - it could be a disadvantage and before I spend hundreds of hours developing content, I wanted to be sure. Unfortunately, these were to be purely informational type sites so not much sense in an ad spend. Oh well, they make nice redirects I suppose. Although I caution everyone not to make my mistake - those .cm domains cost over $100/yr each (ouch!).
I did find some information on a geotargeting meta tag...
<meta name="geo.placename" content="United States" />
<meta name="geo.position" content="x;x" />
<meta name="geo.region" content="usa" />
<meta name="ICBM" content="x,x" />
Just out of curiosity, I will try that approach for one domain with some content and wait and see if it has any effect in Google.
Thanks again :-)
We generally ignore geo-meta tags like that because we've found that they're generally incorrect (copy & pasted from a template, etc).
Generally speaking, I wouldn't assume that the domain name is worthless -- there are a lot of non-US sites that rank well world-wide, similarly it's possible for .cm sites to rank well world-wide. You won't be able to set up geotargeting for a country other than Cameroon at the moment, but that shouldn't stop you from launching an international site.
Hope it helps!
What do you mean about affording a prime .com ?
Are we talking about buying a normal/available .com - or talking about paying for one of those extortionately priced farmed domains off ripoff companies that buy up domains and squat on them?
