Do redirected links cause ranking issues?

I've read the FAQs and searched the help center.
My URL is:

I run the Wordpress Broken Link Checker plugin and a lot of external links get changed. Many are gone, some are redirected. I have fixed the ones that were 404 but left most of those that redirect.

For example, I link to

they have updated to

Does it matter (for me) that I link to the old URL?

If they drop the redirect then you will get a 404. Too many 404s can be seen as a sign your site is not trustworth or up to date. That can hurt you.

Hi Ron i noticed your 301 redirecting  http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/cancer-info/healthyliving/obesityandweight/tentoptips/

3X  ?

to

to

/cancer-info/healthyliving/obesity-bodyweight-and-cancer/ten-top-tips/

with a rel canonical ??

What percentage of PageRank is lost through a 301 redirect?

I also see your 404's  are returning a proper header response code 404 not found
you can just mark them as fixed in WMT

hope this helps

The web changes, sometimes old links break. Googlebot isn't going to lose sleep over broken links :).

If you find things like this, I'd fix it primarily for your users, so that they're able to use your site completely. I wouldn't treat this as something that you'd need to do for SEO purposes on your site, it's really more like other regular maintenance that you might do for your users.

Cheers
John

So too many 404s cannot hurt a site?

Might have to alter the "best reply", not had to do that before!

404's are useful for a few things:

Highlighting a problem with a page/link (perhaps a common misspelling or a miss-typed link)
Indicating to google that a URL should not be indexed (it has no content its missing)

The only damage that can be done to your site are:
if a page 404's that shouldn't (e.g. your homepage) as it would get removed from the index after a few occurrences
It's possible for the googlebot to struggle to discover your urls if it keeps hitting 404's, this is really only an issue if you are causing the 404's through linking to missing pages

Strongly recommend you do alter your best reply (if possible) as it might confuse people who are looking for the same answer as you

Levels

Member levels indicate a user's level of participation in a forum. The greater the participation, the higher the level. Everyone starts at level 1 and can rise to level 10. These activities can increase your level in a forum:

  • Post an answer.
  • Having your answer selected as the best answer.
  • Having your post rated as helpful.
  • Vote up a post.
  • Correctly mark a topic or post as abuse.

Having a post marked and removed as abuse will slow a user's advance in levels.
