The changes in this article only apply if you use Google Voice with a personal Google Account. The changes don’t impact Google Voice on Google Workspace accounts. For info about Google Voice for Google Workspace, go to What can you do with Voice?
Access the latest Google Voice experience
Important: If you have an account with a Google Voice phone number, you already have the latest Google Voice.
If you have a voicemail-only account, upgrade from legacy Google Voice to a full Google Voice account.
Learn about the modern Google Voice
Popular features from legacy Google Voice have been added to Google Voice. Some features, like internet calls, weren’t part of legacy Google Voice and are only available on the latest Google Voice experience.
Navigate the latest Google Voice experience
You can easily find key features in Google Voice:
- To find your Call history, go to Calls .
- To open your messages, go to Messages .
- To open your voicemails, go to Voicemail .
- To open Audio settings, at the top right, go to Audio settings .
- To open general Settings, at the top right, go to Settings .
- You can mark a message or call as spam.
- You can archive a call or message.
These features will be available in the latest Google Voice experience:
- Change Google Voice number: You can change your Google Voice number to a new number. To claim a new number, you must first delete your old number. Learn how to change your Voice number.
- Choose caller ID: You can choose which number to make calls and send messages from. Learn how to manage your caller ID when you make calls.
- Custom call forwarding: You can choose which of the phone numbers linked to your Google Voice account should ring when someone from a certain contact group calls. You can also choose which voicemail message to play. Learn more how to use custom call forwarding with Google Voice.
- Delete Google Voice number: You can delete your Google Voice number from Settings. Learn how to delete your Voice number.
- Google Voice number transfer: If you use Google Voice on a personal Google Account, you can transfer your phone number from one personal Google Account to another. Learn how to transfer your personal number.
- Number porting: You can port a number into and out of Google Voice at any time. Learn how to port your personal number.
- Secondary Google Voice number: You can keep your current Google Voice number as a secondary number when you port a number from your phone carrier. Learn how to keep your Voice number as a secondary number.
- Voicemail transcription toggle: Google Voice can transcribe your voicemails. Learn how to turn voicemail transcriptions on or off.
These features aren’t available or are different in Google Voice:
- Call-to-listen voicemail access: To check your voicemail from a call, you must turn on the “Call-to-listen” feature and set a PIN. When you call your number to check your voicemail, enter the PIN. Learn how to call Google Voice to check your voicemail.
- Call forward rules for SIP devices for Fiber phones only: Call forward rules based on your contacts or caller ID no longer apply if you use a Fiber phone. Calls from contacts or caller IDs with forward rules will ring your desktop phone (SIP device).
- “Do not disturb” timer: Do not disturb is available in Google Voice, but you can no longer set a timer. Learn how to send Google Voice calls to voicemail.
- Non-USD currencies: Google Voice is only available in the US. You can only buy Google Voice credits in US dollars (USD). In the near future, all non-USD credit balances will be automatically converted to USD, and auto-recharging in non-USD will be disabled. Learn more about Google Voice credits.
- Ring schedule: Ring schedule isn’t available. If you used this feature in legacy Google Voice, in the latest Google Voice experience, calls will ring your phone any time of day. If you have a smartphone, you can use your phone’s “Do not disturb” feature to ignore notifications and calls at certain times.
- Settings for Call Forwarding: There’s no setting for Carrier Call Forwarding in the latest Google Voice experience. Carrier-forwarded calls from your linked number automatically go to your Google Voice voicemail. It isn’t possible to have carrier-forwarded calls from a linked number ring on all your devices. If you want your devices to ring from your carrier number, port your number to Google Voice.
- Unauthenticated access to voicemails through links: In Google Voice, you must sign in to your Google Voice account to access your voicemail.
- Voicemail-only accounts: If you have a voicemail-only account without a Google Voice number, upgrade to a full Google Voice account.
