Use Vault to search Gemini app

Google Vault is for administrators and legal personnel. Before you can use Vault, your Google Workspace admin must set up your account. Who is my administrator?

As part of your Google Workspace data eDiscovery projects, you can use Vault to search Gemini app conversations and create an export of your search results.

Things to know before you search

Before you search for Gemini app data, we recommend you review the Gemini app messages supported in Vault and the Vault Search FAQ.

Search for Gemini app conversations

You use matters to search data. Matters are workspaces for your Vault projects and they allow you to group together related holds, searches, and exports. Matters don't restrict the data you can search. All data that you're allowed to access is searchable from any matter.

  1. Sign in to vault.google.com.
  2. If you have created a matter, click Mattersand thenyour matter.

Otherwise, create a matter. For details, go to Create and manage matters.

  3. Click Choose serviceand thenGemini.
  4. Select the entity to search:
    • Specific accounts—Enter up to 5,000 email addresses
    • Organizational unit—Search accounts in a specific organizational unit

If the organizational unit has child organizational units, accounts in the parent and child are searched.

  5. Select a time zone.

For details, go to How does Vault handle time zones and daylight saving time?

  6. (Optional) Enter a range for Date sent.

Note: If you enter dates, Vault returns all prompts and responses sent in that date range.

    • If you enter a start date only, Vault returns all prompts and responses sent on or after that date.
    • If you enter an end date only, Vault returns all prompts and responses sent on or before that date.
  7. (Optional) To run the search and return a list of prompt and response pairs that match your query, click Search.

For details, go to Review search results (later on this page).

  8. (Optional) After your search completes, you can take the following actions:

    • Edit your search—Click Edit query, edit the search query, and click Search.
    • Save your query—Click Save.

For details, go to Save search queries in Vault.

    • Clear all fields and start a new search—Click Clear.
    • Create an export of your search results—Click Export.

To provide context for matching prompts and responses, Vault includes prompts and responses from the same conversation sent 12 hours before and 12 hours after the matched prompt or response. For details, go to Export data from Vault.

Review Search results

When your search completes, the results are displayed in reverse chronological order. To view an expanded preview, move your mouse over the message. Additional preview capabilities are coming soon.

Each row contains information on:

  • Message—consists of a user prompt and a Gemini app response. The content might be truncated in the list, but the full prompt and response content is shown if you export the results.
  • Topic—The title of the conversation
  • Owner—The email address of the message owner.
  • Date and time—The date and time of the prompt and response.
