Get started with Tag Manager

1. Create an account and container

Google Tag Manager lets you configure and deploy tags from Google products and third parties. This article is for anyone who wants to set up Google Tag Manager for the first time and manage tags on a website. Learn more about Tag Manager.

First, create a Google Tag Manager account that represents the topmost level of organization for your company. Then, create one Tag Manager container for each of your company's websites and apps.

For subtitles in your language, turn on YouTube captions. Select the settings icon Image of YouTube settings icon at the bottom of the video player, then select "Subtitles/CC" and choose your language.

Steps

  1. Go to https://tagmanager.google.com.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. Learn how to create a Google Account.
  3. In Tag Manager, click the Accounts tab (top left), then select Create Account (top right). Find your way around Tag Manager.
  4. In the Account Setup section, follow these steps:
    1. Enter an account name.
    2. Select the country location for the account.
    3. Optional: Select Share data anonymously with Google and others to enable benchmarking by sharing your data in an anonymous form. Google removes all identifiable information about your website, combines the data with hundreds of other anonymous sites, and reports aggregate trends in the benchmarking service.
  5. In the Container Setup section, follow these steps:
    1. Enter a container name (for example, use your website link or app project name).
Note: If you're creating a container for a website, the container name should be the top-most URL for your website (for example, www.example.com). You don't need a container for each page of your website.
    2. Select from these container types:
      1. Web (most common) for a website or web app
      2. iOS for an iOS app on Apple devices
      3. Android for an Android app on Android devices
      4. AMP for a website that uses Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)
      5. Server for a website that uses server-side Tag Manager
  6. Click Create and agree to the Terms of Service.

If your company has more than one website or app, create another container by returning to the Accounts tab (top left) and then, next to the account name, clicking More > Create Container.

Next steps

Once you create your container, continue to the next step to install the necessary code snippets for your website's Google Tag Manager container:
