About version history

When you edit an ad and save it, you create a new version of your ad. Version history lets you go back and see previous versions of your ad, as well as data on how those ads performed.

This article explains the benefits of version history and how to view version history for your ads.

How it works

When you edit an ad, such as changing the final URL, you can see the old version of the ad by looking at its version history.

Version history includes the dates that each version was edited, how long that version was in place for, and what changed.

The information about how long the version was in place can include review periods, or periods where the ad wasn’t showing (because it was paused, for example).

Bear in mind

Before your new ads start running, they’ll go through the ad approval process.

How to see the version history of an ad from a Google Ads campaign

  1. Sign in to your new Search Ads 360.
  2. Navigate to a Google Ads account.
  3. From the page menu on the left, click Ads & assets, then click Ads from the expanded menu.
  4. Find the ad that you want to see the version history for.
  5. Hover over the ad and click the pencil icon Edit when it appears, then select See version history.

In the ads table, you'll see data on how different versions of your ad performed. To download the ad’s version history as a CSV file, click the download icon A picture of the download icon for Google Ads and Merchant Center above the table.

How to see the version history of an ad from a Microsoft Advertising campaign

Sign in to Microsoft Advertising to see the version history of ads from your Microsoft Advertising campaigns.

Instead of editing your ad, try creating new ads to test how well different versions of your ad perform. By default, your ad rotation settings will show better performing ads more often.
