To have apps use your phone's battery only when you need them to, keep adaptive battery and battery optimization on. These settings are on by default.
Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 9 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.
Check that adaptive battery is on for your phone
If you keep adaptive battery on, apps that you use less often will run less while you're not using them. Your phone can learn how you use your apps over time. This can help save battery in ways that work best for you.
- Open your phone's Settings app.
- Tap Battery
Adaptive preferences.
- Turn on Adaptive Battery.
When your battery is very low, adaptive battery may reduce your phone's performance and background app activity.
Turn on battery optimization for each app
Important: If you turn off battery optimization for an app, that app can run more while you're not using it, even when adaptive battery is on. This can use more battery than needed.
- Open your phone's Settings app.
- Tap Apps
All apps.
- Choose your app. Then, tap Battery.
- Under "Manage battery usage," tap Optimized.
Tip: Battery optimization isn’t available for some essential services.
