Tap & pay with your Pixel phone

You can use Tap & pay for purchases at retailers that accept contactless payments.

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 9 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Turn on NFC (Near Field Communication)

Important: If you don't see the NFC setting, your phone doesn't have NFC. You won't be able to tap & pay.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices And then Connection preferences.
  3. Turn on NFC.

Manage apps that use Tap & pay

  1. Make sure Tap & pay is turned on.
  2. Open the app you want to use for Tap & pay.
  3. Open your phone's Settings app.
  4. Tap Apps & notifications and then Advanced and then Default apps. 
  5. Tap Tap & pay and then Payment default.
  6. Pick your default payment app.

Tip: To show in Settings, your payment apps must work with Tap & pay. Money transfer apps don't work with Tap & pay. You can find payment apps on Google Play or in the Play Store app Google Play.

Open your cards & passes with the power button

If you use the Google Pay app for Tap & pay, you can press your power button to see your Google Pay payment methods and passes on your home screen. You can turn cards and passes on or off with your Settings app.

Important: You must have Google Pay installed and set up to open your cards and passes with the power button.

  1. Open your Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Gestures and then Cards & passes.
  3. Turn Cards & passes on or off.

Turn off Tap & pay

Important: Turning off NFC also turns off other features that use NFC.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices And then Connection preferences.
  3. Turn off NFC
Tip: You can also open your payment app and turn off Tap & pay. Not all payment apps support this option.
