Delete photos and videos

You can delete up to 500 photos and videos from your Google Photos library or in your SD card at a time.

Before you delete photos and videos

Know where photos do and don't get removed. 

Photos and videos you delete are also removed from:

Photos and videos you delete are not automatically removed from:

  • Blogger
  • YouTube
  • Gmail
  • Google+

Get more time to recover deleted photos and videos

If you want time to recover deleted photos and videos, turn on back up & sync. Deleted items will stay in the trash for 60 days before they're permanently deleted.

Give permissions to delete photos from your SD card

Step 1: Check if you have Android 5.0 and up

These steps will only work if you have Android 5.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.  

Step 2: Select your SD card

When you select your memory card, you give Google Photos permissions to access your SD card.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. 
  3. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then SD card access.
  4. Tap Get Started.
  5. At the top right, tap More More and then Show SD card.
  6. Select your memory card. 
  7. At the bottom, tap Select.

Delete your photos and videos

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. 
  3. At the bottom, tap Photos.
  4. Tap and hold a photo or video you want to move to trash. You can also select multiple photos.
  5. At the top right, tap Trash Trash and then Move to trash.

Tips:

  • To move all your photos to a different account, share your photo library with that account. Learn how to share your Google Photos library with another account.
  • To delete permanently from your device, on the photo, tap More More and then Delete from device
  • If a photo or video you deleted comes back, it might be on a removable memory card. To delete it, use your device’s Gallery app. 

Restore photos & videos

If you want to get a deleted item back, check your trash to see if you can get it back. If your photo or video has already been backed up and you deleted it, it will remain in your Trash for 60 days.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Trash Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone
    • Into the "Photos" section of the app.
    • Into any albums it was in.
