Tap & pay with your device

You can use tap & pay with your compatible Android device to pay for purchases at merchants that accept contactless payments.

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Turn on NFC to set up tap & pay on your device

To use tap & pay, you'll first need to turn on NFC (Near Field Communication).

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices
  3. Turn on NFC.

If you don't see the NFC setting, your device doesn't have NFC. You won't be able to tap & pay.

Manage apps that use tap & pay

Many payment apps let you tap & pay. You can find payment apps on Google Play or in the Play Store app Google Play.

Set a default payment app

If you have multiple payment apps that use tap & pay, you can pick which one to use by default when you tap & pay at a store.

  1. Open the payment app. Make sure tap & pay is turned on.
  2. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  3. Tap Apps & notifications and then Advanced and then Default apps
  4. Tap Tap & pay and then Payment default.
  5. Pick your default payment app.

Note: To show in Settings, your payment apps must work with tap & pay. Money transfer apps and Android Beam don't work with tap & pay.

Turn tap & pay off

You can turn tap & pay off in 2 ways:

  • In your payment app, turn off tap & pay. Not all payment apps support this option.
  • Open your device's Settings app Settings app and then Connected devices and then turn off NFC

Note: Turning off NFC also turns off other NFC features, like Android Beam.
