Use real-time text (RTT) with calls

Real-time text (RTT) lets you use text to communicate during a phone call. RTT works with TTY and doesn't require any additional accessories.

Important:

  • The information in this article might not apply to all devices. To find out if you can use RTT with your device and service plan, check with your carrier. RTT uses call minutes, just like a voice call.
  • At this time, Google Fi doesn't support RTT. Learn more about Google Fi accessibility features.

Step 1: Turn on RTT

To turn on RTT, go to your Phone app settings.

Step 2: Use RTT

You can place a call with RTT, or you can switch from voice to RTT during a call.

  • RTT calls include an audio stream. To mute or un-mute your microphone, tap Mute .
  • You can have multiple RTT calls going at the same time.
  • You can use RTT to call emergency services. For select carriers, RTT is available for emergency calls even if you've selected "Not visible" in your phone app settings.
  • RTT isn't available when roaming abroad.
