What is the Map Maker Mobile Buddy?

With Map Maker Mobile Buddy, you can quickly create notes while you;re out in the world about all of the things you want to add or edit on the map once you’re back in front of a computer. You can then upload this information to Google Map Maker and continue to enhance Google Maps.

Install the Map Maker Mobile Buddy

  1. Scan the QR Code with your Android phone to download the Google Map Maker Mobile Buddy app. Or, follow this link: http://goo.gl/ojWGqm.
  2. Saying "OK" will download the .apk file.
  3. Click on the downloaded .apk file. Choose Install.

Note: Your phone may be set to block the installation of apps obtained by unknown sources. If so, just open your "Settings," click Security, and check "Unknown sources" under "Device Administration".

Note: This app is not available on the Google Play store.

Use the app

Add a text note
  1. Open the Mobile Buddy on your device.
  2. Click the Add Info icon.
  3. Type any information you want to remember about the place.
  4. Click the check mark icon to create the note.
  5. To edit the text again, click the text or click the info icon on the bottom right of the note.
If you're connected to a network, creating a note will download a static map. We suggest going offline when collecting data to decrease potential data costs.
Add a photo note
  1. Click on the add photo button.
  2. Take the photo using the camera on your mobile device.
  3. Click on the check mark icon.

To add additional photos, click the photo icon on the bottom right of the desired note.

To view photos, click the photos on the right side of the desired note.

To delete a photo, click the photos on the right side of the desired note. Then long press on an image. Select all images you'd like to delete and click the trash icon.

Note: You will not be able to delete photos once they have been uploaded from Mobile Buddy app to Map Maker, but they will be unlisted.

Upload your notes to Map Maker
  1. Open the Mobile Buddy on your device.
  2. Make sure you have internet connection. Map Maker Buddy works mostly offline, but requires internet for uploading.
  3. Click the upload icon in the top right. The upload icon will show the number of notes to be uploaded.
  4. The status of the upload will be shown at the bottom of the screen.
Add or edit a place on Map Maker using a note
  1. Open Map Maker on your computer.
  2. Click My Activities. Your notes will appear among your other Map Maker Activities. To see only your Notes, click My Notes under My Activities.
  3. Click the Note that you want to use. An info window will appear on the map.
  4. Click Details in the info window.
  5. Click Add new or Edit to convert the note into an edit.
  6. Make the desired changes and submit your edit.

Frequently asked questions

What type of notes can I save?
The Mobile Buddy can be used to collect three kinds of information: point location, text, and photos. If you want to collect line information for mapping roads, trails or even building outlines, try using the MyTracks Android App and using Map Maker Overlays.
Which types of devices can I use?
The Mobile Buddy application is only available for Android devices. Android must be running Gingerbread (Android 2.3) or later.
In what languages is Mobile Buddy available?
The Mobile Buddy application is currently available only in English.
How do I navigate in the app?
  • To return the red marker to your location, click the compass icon in the upper right corner.
  • To zoom in, touch the map once to expand it to twice it's size. To zoom out, touch it once again to bring it back to normal.
  • To toggle between satellite and map view, click the layers icon in the bottom right corner when in the expanded map view.

Does the Mobile Buddy app work offline?
Yes. You can collect information as notes while offline and then upload them once you have an internet connection. If you have offline maps downloaded on your Google Maps for Mobile application, map tiles will also appear offline for the Map Maker Mobile Buddy.

Where do I find my notes on Map Maker?
Notes appear on Google Map Maker under My Activities once they have been uploaded, along with your other Map Maker Activities. To see just your Notes, click the more icon and select "Notes".
How do I change the location of a note in Mobile Buddy?
  1. Open the Map Maker Mobile Buddy. Ensure that your GPS has been turned on for a more accurate reading.
  2. Touch the map to move the red marker to a more accurate location.
  3. Add either a text or a photo, or both, in order to store the location.
How do I delete a photo note in Mobile Buddy?

To delete a photo, click the photos on the right side of the desired note. Then long press on an image. Select all images you'd like to delete and click the trash icon.

Note: You will not be able to delete photos once they have been uploaded from Mobile Buddy app to Map Maker, but they will be unlisted.

Why is the location inaccurate?

To help make the location information more accurate, turn on your phone's GPS signal.

How do I choose which account to upload my notes to?
  1. When you upload your first note, you will be asked to "Select an account."
  2. Choose the account to which you'd like to upload your notes.
  3. Go to your Android phone's settings.
  4. Click Apps.
  5. Find "Map Maker Buddy" in the list and click it.
  6. Click Clear data. This will reset your app. You’ll lose any notes you have not already uploaded.
  7. When you go to upload your next note, you will again be asked to "Select an account" and you can choose a different account.
What if my notes fail to upload?
Notes may fail to upload if there is a network disconnection. If your notes fail to upload, the application will indicate this on the bottom of the screen.

Click the refresh icon in the bottom of the screen to re-attempt to upload the notes. Notes can be uploaded only when the location information is available in the note. In case there is no location in a note, you need to manually reset the location in the note.

Are my notes private?
Your notes are private when they are on your Mobile Buddy app. Once you upload them to Map Maker, they will be unlisted. This means that only you and people who have the link to the note will be able to view the notes. If you use a note to add or edit the map, Map Maker will indicate to other reviewers whether or not a note was used to create an edit, but will not display the details of this note to others.
Can I modify or delete my notes after I've uploaded them?
No. Once your notes have been uploaded to Map Maker, you can only use them to add, edit, or inform your mapping. You can't modify or delete these notes.
