Guidelines

Follow these guidelines to make sure that you submit high quality data for your products.

Minimum requirements

These are the requirements that you'll need to meet to show your product on Google. If you don't follow these requirements, we'll disapprove your product and let you know in the Diagnostics page of your Manufacturer Center account.

  • Submit the colour of your product.
  • Use the same colour in your product data as on your landing page. For example, if you use 'Toasted Walnut' on your landing page, then submit that value in your product data. Don't submit 'Brown'.
  • Submit colour [color] for all products that vary by colour. Use this attribute when your product is a variant that's distinguished by its colour (for example, black suede shoes and blue suede shoes), and also submit each variant with the same value for the item group ID [item_group_id] attribute.

  • Include up to three colours. If your product is made up of several colours, you can specify one primary colour followed by up to two secondary colours that are each separated by a slash ( / ). For example: Red/Green/Black. Don’t submit multiple colours with a comma ( , )
  • Don't use a number as a colour such as '0 2 4 6 8'.
  • Don't use characters that aren't alphanumeric such as '#fff000'.
  • Don't reference the product or image such as 'see image'.
  • Don't include a value that isn't a colour such as 'variety', 'mens', 'womens', 'N/A'.

Best practices

These best practices can help you go beyond the basic requirements to optimise your product data for performance.

  • Submit a material value in addition to colour to indicate a precious metal. If your product is made of a precious metal, like a gold ring, submit this information with the material [material] and colour [color] attributes.
  • You may use standard colour names in your product title. For the colour [color] attribute, submit the colour that matches your landing page. If you'd like to keep the generic colour value, use the title [title] for placing the generic value. For example, a user is more likely to search for 'red dress' than 'cinnamon apple dress'.
  • Use consistent names of colours across variants of the same product, as well as across multiple products of the same category, for example if you sell a handbag in three colours, 'red', 'pink' and 'blue', submit 'red', 'pink' and 'blue' and not 'red, pink and see product for details'.

Examples

Unique colour names

If you describe your product on your landing page using a unique color, like 'Pop Girl' or 'High Five', submit that value through the colour [color] attribute. Then add a more standard colour name, like 'Red' or 'Black', to your title [title].
