Mark a message as read or unread

In Google Chat, you can mark messages unread to easily get back to important messages. You can also mark a message as read without opening a conversation.

When you mark a message as unread, you will get a red dot notification on that chat or space. 

For a direct chat conversation and unnamed group chats:

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. At the bottom, tap Chat.
  3. To mark a message as read or unread, choose an option:
  • Swipe left on a Chat message.
  • Press and hold the chat or unnamed group chat and then tap Mark as read "" or Mark as unread "".
  • Tap a conversation to open it. Press and hold a message and then tap Mark as read "" or Mark as unread "".
  • Tap a conversation to open it. At the top, next to the chat name, click Conversation options Right arrow and then Mark as unread "".

For a Space: 

  1. Open the Chat app "" or Gmail app "".
  2. At the bottom, tap Spaces. 
  3. To mark a message as read or unread, choose an option:
  • Swipe left on a Chat message.
  • Press and hold the space and then tap Mark as read "" or Mark as unread "".
  • Tap a conversation to open it. At the top, next to the space name, click Conversation options Right arrow  and then Mark as unread "".
