In Google Chat, you can mark messages unread to easily get back to important messages. You can also mark a message as read without opening a conversation.
When you mark a message as unread, you will get a red dot notification on that chat or space.
For a direct chat conversation and unnamed group chats:
- Open the Chat app
or Gmail app

- At the bottom, tap Chat.
- To mark a message as read or unread, choose an option:
- Swipe left on a Chat message.
- Press and hold the chat or unnamed group chat

or Mark as unread

- Tap a conversation to open it. Press and hold a message
tap Mark as read
or Mark as unread
.
- Tap a conversation to open it. At the top, next to the chat name, click Conversation options

For a Space:
- Open the Chat app

- At the bottom, tap Spaces.
- To mark a message as read or unread, choose an option:
- Swipe left on a Chat message.
- Press and hold the space

- Tap a conversation to open it. At the top, next to the space name, click Conversation options
