Get started with bots

Bots are special accounts you can chat with, just as you would with people. Bots provide a conversational way for you to connect to services in Hangouts Chat, such as looking up information, scheduling meetings, or doing tasks.

Note: Bots may support some, but not all of these services. 

Google creates and maintains some bots, such as the Meet and Google Drive bots. Other bots are created and maintained by third-party software vendors. To install bots, your G Suite administrator needs to give you permission.

Find bots and add them to Chat

You can find bots available in your organization and send the bot a direct message or add them to rooms.

  1. Open the Chat app Hangouts Chat.
  2. Tap Add Add.
  3. Tap Message a bot.
  4. Enter a bot name or select from the list of suggestions.

Get help or give feedback

You can send a message to the bot to get help or give feedback.

  1. Open the Chat app Hangouts Chat.
  2. Open a direct message with the bot or go to a room with the bot.
  3. Show the commands you can use with the bot:
    • In a direct message, enter help.
    • In a room, enter @botname help, where botname is the name of the bot.
  4. Send a comment about the bot to Google:
    • In a direct message, enter feedback text, where text is your comment.
    • In a room, enter @botname feedback text.

Remove a bot

  1. Open the Chat app Hangouts Chat.
  2. At the bottom, tap People People.
  3. Tap the bot you want to remove.
  4. At the top, tap the bot name, then tap Remove.
