Change an ebook's font size, color, & more

You can change the display color for most ebooks. For some ebooks, you can also change the font size, color, and line spacing.

Make the font bigger

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Depending on the book:
    • Tap the top of the screen. Then, tap Display options Display options and then Text and then Increase font size increase font size.
    • Pinch open to zoom in.

Tip: If your view is set to Original pages, you can keep the same font size later. Turn on “Remember zoom” in the Display options.

Change the font style, alignment, & spacing

Tip: Not all books offer these options.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Tap the top of the screen. Then, tap Display options Display options and then Text.
  4. Change a setting:
    • Font style: Tap a typeface.
    • Line spacing: Tap Increase line space increase line space or Decrease line space decrease line space
    • Text alignment: Tap Default, Left, or Justify.

Change the color & brightness

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Tap the top of the screen. Then, tap Display options Display options and then Tone.
  4. Change the color or brightness:
    • To make the screen brighter, drag the brightness scale.
    • To change the color scheme, tap Light, Dark, or Sepia.

Tip: You can also turn on Dark theme for your phone. Learn more about Dark theme on Android.

Make it easier to read at night

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Tap the top of the screen. Then, tap Display options Display options and then Tone.
  4. Depending on your phone:
    • Turn on Night Light.
    • Next to “Night Light,” tap Settings Settings. Then, choose an option:
      • Dim the screen now: Tap Turn on now.
      • Dim the screen at night: Tap Schedule and then Turns on from sunset to sunrise.
      • Dim the screen at a certain time: Tap Schedule and then Turns on at custom time.

Tip: On some phones, when you turn on Night Light for Google Play Books, it turns on the Night Light feature for your whole phone. To turn off Night Light for other apps, turn off Night Light for Google Play Books.

Show your reading progress

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. To show your reading stats, tap anywhere on the page.
    • To hide your stats, tap two more times.
    • To select a page number, tap on the top half of the page, and use the slider that appears below.
