Participate in Designed for Families

Designed for Families is Google's family-friendly destination for apps designed for kids and/or families.

Review the policy and program requirements

Before you opt in to the Designed for Families program on your Play Console, make sure your app meets all of the policy and program requirements in the Developer Policy Center.

How to opt in

  1. Sign in to your Play Console.
  2. Select your app. Before continuing, make sure you've added a privacy policy on your store listing page.
  3. On the left menu, click Store presencePricing & distribution.
  4. Next to "Designed for Families," click the opt-in checkbox.
  5. Confirm that your app meets the eligibility requirements and ads policy.
  6. Select your app's target age group (based on your app's primary target audience).
    • If you indicated that your app is primarily child-directed and your app is specifically designed for two age groups, you can choose two adjacent age groups.
    • If you indicated that your app is not primarily child-directed, you must select "Mixed Audience."
    • Apps with an ESRB 10+ rating can only choose "Ages 9-12" or "Mixed audience."
  7. Select a category for your app in the family-focused section of Google Play. Your app will still be available in its existing store listing category.
  8. Once you've reviewed and agreed to the program requirements, click Opt in.
  9. Save your changes. Once you've submitted your information, your app will be reviewed for eligibility in the Designed for Families program.

How to opt out

Apps that are primarily child-directed must participate in the Designed for Families program. If your app is not primarily child-directed, you can opt out of Designed for Families at any time.

By opting out, your app will lose its placement in the Family section, its standing on Family top charts, the Family star badge, and other benefits of the program. Opting out of Designed for Families doesn't change legal requirements your app may have under COPPA and other laws relating to child-directed apps.

If you opt out of the program, we strongly recommend letting your existing users know using the "What's New" section of your store listing page.

To opt out:

  1. Sign in to your Play Console.
  2. Select your app.
  3. On the left menu, click Store presencePricing & distribution.
  4. Next to "Designed for Families," uncheck the box.
  5. Save your changes. After you opt out, it can take a few days for your app to be removed from the Designed for Families program.

Apps rejected from Designed for Families

If your app is rejected from the Designed for Families program, we'll let you know why in the Play Console and by email.

  • If you want to reapply to the program, you can correct the issues and submit your app again.
  • To appeal an app rejection, fill out this form.

If your app is not primarily child-directed, you can change your opt-in response on your app's Pricing & distribution page to submit your app update.

Existing apps

If you have an existing app that is available on Google Play that gets rejected from the Designed for Families program, only your update will be rejected. Your app will still be available on Google Play.

If your app has been removed or suspended, you can find more information on how this affects your account or file an appeal.

New apps

If you've submitted a new app to the Designed for Families program that doesn't meet program requirements, your entire app submission will be rejected. The app will not be published on Google Play.

To publish your app, you can address the identified issue(s) and resubmit the app for the Designed for Families program or opt out of the program and submit your app for standard review.
