Pay with your smartwatch

In certain countries or regions, you can use your smartwatch to make contactless payments where Google Pay is accepted.

To use Google Pay on your watch, you need to:

Important:

  • PayPal on Google Pay isn't supported on watches.
  • At this time, you can't pay with your Google Pay balance on your watch.
  • At this time, you can't add a discount, loyalty, or rewards card to Google Pay on your watch.
  • For JP users, we support VISA Contactless, MasterCard Contactless, and Suica. You can follow the steps in this article for VISA Contactless and MasterCard Contactless. For Suica, visit Pay with Suica on your smartwatch. Other e-money cards, QUICPay and iD aren’t supported on smartwatches at this time.

Add a card to your watch

If you add a card to your watch, you won't need your phone to pay.

Important: At this time, you can't add a discount, loyalty, or rewards card to Google Pay on your watch.

  1. On your watch, open the Google Pay app Google Pay.
  2. Tap Get started.
  3. Set up screen lock if you haven't already.
  4. On your phone, follow the instructions to add a credit or debit card.
    • Tip: This only adds a card to the Google Pay app on your watch not your phone.
  5. Your card will show up on your watch.

Make a payment in a store

  1. On your watch, open the Google Pay app Google Pay.
  2. Hold your watch over the contactless payment reader until you hear a sound or feel vibration from your watch.

    1. Select Credit.
    2. If asked, enter the pin you set up with your bank.

Fix a problem

Can’t add a card or it was removed

Can't add a card

If you can't use your card with Google Pay, double-check the list of participating banks and supported cards.

If you have questions or feedback about your card, contact your bank.

Get a "Network error" when you add a card

Make sure your phone is nearby. Your phone and watch should have Bluetooth turned on and an internet connection (either cellular or Wi-Fi).

Card was automatically removed

For your security, cards added to Google Pay on your watch are deleted when your screen lock is removed. To re-add your card, open Google Pay on your watch, add a screen lock, and then add your card again.

Watch says "Can't connect" or "Can't check accounts" or says to restart phone

Watch says "Can't connect" and freezes when adding a card

  1. Make sure your phone's Bluetooth is on.
  2. On your phone, open the Wear OS app Wear OS by Google.
  3. At the top, make sure it says "Connected."
  4. On your watch, open the Google Pay app and try to connect again.

Watch says "Can't check accounts" when you open the app

To fix this error, update the Google Pay app.

  1. On your watch, open the Play Store app Play Store.
  2. Swipe from the top and tap My Apps.
  3. Scroll and tap Google Pay.
  4. Tap Update.
  5. Re-open the Google Pay app Google Pay.

App says to restart phone

  1. Restart your phone (not your watch).
  2. Wait 30-60 seconds. This makes sure your phone has installed updates needed to use your watch.
  3. On your watch, open Google Pay and tap Retry Retry.

Loading circle doesn't stop

Close the Google Pay app on your watch and open it again. If that doesn't work, to restart the watch, hold down the Power button.

Trouble using Google Pay on watch in stores

1. Make sure watch is on tight and unlocked

Tap the screen to find if Google Pay asked you to unlock your watch. If so, unlock it before you pay.

2. Make sure Google Pay app is open

Just before you pay, open Google Pay on your watch and make sure you can see the card you want to pay with on the screen.

3. Hold your watch at the reader longer

Try to hold the NFC on your watch over the reader until it beeps and your watch vibrates.

You can also try to hold your watch against the reader in a different position. This helps because your watch talks to the reader using NFC (Near Field Communication). Most watches' NFC antenna is behind the screen but check your watch's manual for the exact location.

4. Make sure the store accepts contactless payments

Ask the cashier if the store accepts contactless payments. If they don’t, you need to use a physical card.

Set Google Pay as your default for payments

After you download Google Pay on a new device, you may need to set it as your default for payments.
  1. On your watch, open Settings.
  2. Go to "Connectivity," or "Connections," section.
  3. Tap NFC.
  4. Ensure Google Pay is selected as your payment provider.
Tip: If you have Google Pay installed by default, you do not need to go through these steps.
