The new Nest Aware FAQ

Nest Aware is a paid subscription service you can use with your Nest products to help keep you informed about important events at your home.

The new Nest Aware offers:

  • One low subscription price for all Nest products in your home, including cameras, speakers (US only) and displays (US only).
  • Event-based recording (EBR), which records only when the camera detects activity, to help you focus on the events that matter. You can also upgrade to Nest Aware Plus, which includes 24/7 continuous video recording (CVR).
  • Emergency calling (US only). Use Nest speakers and displays or the Google Home app to call emergency services for your home.
  • Sound detection (US only). Nest speakers and Nest Hub can alert you when they detect the sound of a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm.

You can keep your current Nest Aware subscription and upgrade to the new Nest Aware when you're ready.

What’s new in Nest Aware?

One low price for your entire home

The new Nest Aware subscription covers all Nest products in your home for one fixed price. If you add a new product to your home, the price stays the same.

You can choose from two simple plans: Nest Aware, with 30 days of event video history, at $6 per month (or $60 for an annual subscription), or Nest Aware Plus, with 60 days of event video history and 10 days of 24/7 video history, at $12 per month (or $120 for an annual subscription). Both plans include access to the Feed, Emergency calling (US only) and Sound detection (US only).

Event-based recording

1st gen Nest Aware uses 24/7 continuous video recording (CVR) to save your camera’s video history to the cloud. The new Nest Aware makes it easier to find important events with event-based recording (EBR).

When the green light is on, your camera is monitoring its surroundings for activity. But EBR only saves video to your history when your camera detects activity, such as a person walking by or a dog barking.

This means you can check your event clips quickly in the Google Home app or the Nest app without scrolling through hours of continuous video history. Like 1st gen Nest Aware, you can still save, download and share clips with other people.

If you still want a record of everything your camera sees with 24/7 CVR, a Nest Aware Plus subscription will save 10 days of 24/7 video history and 60 days of events to the cloud.

And if you don’t feel like recording, you can always turn off your camera’s microphone and/or video streaming with the Nest app.

Feed

The Feed is a new section of the Google Home app that shows you the events your supported Nest products detect. With the Feed you can find out what happened at home, all in one place.

For example, the Feed will show you:

  • Events from all your Nest cameras
  • Sounds detected (US only)
  • Nest Wifi outages, and more

You can check your Feed for important events, like a person seen, or a general recap of the day’s recent events in your home. You can also tap on Feed events to take action, like watch a video clip or listen to an audio clip.

Priority Events

Sound detection for speakers and displays

Sound detection is only available in the US.

The new Nest Aware’s sound detection turns any ordinary smoke alarm into an alarm that can alert you even if you’re away from home.

Sound detection enables your Nest speakers or Nest Hub to listen for smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. If those sounds are detected a notification* is sent to your phone. This lets you know there’s a possible emergency at home, even when you’re not there. The Home app will give you options to listen to a recorded audio clip of the sound, listen to live audio of what is currently happening in your home, or quickly call 911 with emergency calling.

Important: Nest speakers and displays are not able to detect the presence of smoke and carbon monoxide in your home. They can only detect the sound of a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm.

Emergency calling

Emergency calling is only available for US homes.

Normally, if you dial 911 from your cell phone, your call is routed to the emergency call center closest to your phone’s location. The new Nest Aware’s emergency calling connects you to the emergency call center closest to your home.

This lets you quickly contact your local emergency services no matter where you are, even if you’re far away from home**. You’ll be connected to an emergency call center based on the home address you enter in the Google Home app.

  • When you’re away
If you have a Nest Cam, or have sound detection enabled on a speaker or display, you can easily call emergency services with the Home app. For example, if you get a notification that a smoke alarm was heard, you can call 911 emergency services from the Feed.

That way, if you’re away from home and use Nest Aware emergency calling you’ll be routed to a call center that can dispatch emergency responders to your home’s location.

  • When you’re home
If you can’t get to your phone right away, say “OK Google, call 911” to any Nest or Home speaker or display covered by your Nest Aware subscription.

Note: Emergency calling requires a working cellular or internet connection.

Do I use the Google Home app or the Nest app?

This depends on what products you have and the features you want to use.

You’ll use the Home app for the Feed, Sound detection, and to make Emergency calls.

Features available in the Nest app won’t change. For instance, you’ll still get camera and doorbell notifications from the Nest app, and use the Nest app to watch live streams, review recorded video and change camera settings.

What are the requirements for the new Nest Aware?

How do I buy a subscription to the new Nest Aware?

You can buy subscriptions to the new Nest Aware from the Google Store starting in early 2020. Nest Aware is available in all countries where Google officially sells cameras and Hello

If you can’t buy a new Nest Aware subscription from the Google Store because you have a Nest account, the Google Store will guide you through the steps to migrate your Nest account to a Google account and complete payment migration to Google Pay.
