Learn about Nest Secure's glass break detection

On April 8, 2024, Nest will no longer support Nest Secure. It will not be accessible in the Nest app and will no longer connect to the internet. You will not be able to use the Nest app to check the status of your Nest Secure, control your Nest Secure devices, or receive notifications from your alarm system.

  • Nest Guard can use its built-in microphone to detect when a glass window or door in your home is broken, and then sound the alarm. 
  • Glass break detection is off by default and must be manually turned on with the Nest app.
  • You can turn on glass break detection for Home and Guarding, or Away and Guarding or both. 
  • Glass break detection should only be used when your home is generally quiet such as when no one is home or people are sleeping. If there’s a lot of noise in your home detection may not work as expected.
  • Note: Sound Detection, which can also alert you to glass breaking, is available for  Google speakers, and Google displays.


Nest Guard placement guidelines

  • Nest Guard should be within 15 feet of the glass door or window you want to monitor. 
  • There should be no obstructions (like heavy curtains or a wall) between Nest Guard and the glass door or window. If there are, the microphone might not be able to hear the sound of glass breaking.
How to set up Glass break detection
  1. Install Nest Guard if you haven’t already. 
  2. Open the Nest app.
  3. Tap the main security screen and then SettingsNest settings icon and then Security levels
  4. Choose Away and Guarding or Home and Guarding
  5. Tap Glass break detection
  6. Turn on Glass break detection and choose the amount of time you want before the alarm sounds. 
  7. If you want to set up glass break detection in another security level, go back to step 3. 

Note: You must turn on glass break detection in each security level you want it to be active in. 

Troubleshoot when glass break detection doesn’t work

Here are some things to check if you expected to receive a glass break notification and didn’t.

  • Nest Guard should be within 15 feet of the glass door or window. 
  • There should be no obstructions between Nest Guard and the glass door or window. 
  • Glass break detection won’t work if:
  • Glass break detection also turns off temporarily:
    • When Nest Guard speaks or plays a tone, such as when you disarm it
    • During a sound check
    • When the alarm sounds
    • Note: Glass break detection turns back on automatically when the action is finished.

Your privacy with glass break detection

  • Glass break detection is off by default. If you choose to turn this feature on, Nest Guard’s microphone is listening for glass break sounds whenever Nest Guard is armed to a security level you've enabled glass break detection for.  
  • When Nest Guard detects a possible glass break sound, it captures the audio and analyzes it to determine if the sound was actually glass breaking. 
  • The captured audio is processed on the device, and not sent to Google servers. 
  • Nest Guard can occasionally make a mistake and identify a sound as glass breaking when it was not. For example, it can sometimes misclassify a loud sound as glass breaking. 
  • You can turn off glass break detection at any time.
