Update Nest products and apps

If your Nest products have a reliable internet connection, they should update their software automatically. Keep in mind that we gradually push updates to Nest products in batches, so your product might not get updated immediately. You can also set your phone to automatically install the latest version of the Nest app and the Google Home app.

Update the Home app and Nest app

If you need to troubleshoot an issue, a key step is to make sure that you have the latest version of the app that includes the latest bug fixes and features.  It's recommended that you set your phone to get automatic app updates so you get the latest features and improvements as soon as they're available.

To automatically update apps, go to the following articles:

  2. Go to Version  Update.
Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat
  1. From the Quick view menu on your thermostat, select Settings Nest settings icon.
  2. Choose Software  Update.

Troubleshooting

If a new software version is available for your thermostat but it hasn't updated, it could be caused by one or more of the following:

  • Your thermostat is not connected to a reliable internet connection through the Wi-Fi network. Your thermostat or the app lets you know when there's a connection issue.
Troubleshoot Wi-Fi issues for Nest thermostats
  • The battery charge is below 3.7 volts. If so, your thermostat waits until the battery is charged enough to update its software.
Troubleshoot power issues for Nest thermostats
  • The heating or cooling system is running. Turn your thermostat off to check if that fixes the issue.
  • There's a problem with the wiring. You need to fix any wiring issues before your thermostat can update its software.

Note: Some thermostat models can receive updates regardless of whether it has been added to an account in the app, as long as it's connected to Wi-Fi.

Nest Protects

As long as your Nest Protect is connected to Wi-Fi and the internet, it can update itself automatically.

Troubleshooting

If it's been more than a week and your Nest Protect hasn't received the latest software, try to reset its connection to the Wi-Fi network.

  1. Press the button on your Nest Protect once. It should say, "Ready. Press to test."
  2. Press and hold the button for about 5 seconds until your Protect says, "Checking the network."
  3. Wait 15 minutes.
  4. Check Nest Protect's software version again. If it's been updated to the latest version, you're good to go.

Nest cameras and doorbells

As long as your Nest camera or doorbell is connected to Wi-Fi and the internet, it should automatically update itself. You don't need to do anything.
Nest cameras and doorbells can't be updated manually.

Troubleshooting

If your camera or doorbell is offline in the app and can't update, you can find steps to troubleshoot when your Nest camera or doorbell is offline in our Help Center.

Nest Secure (Guard, Detect, and Connect)

When Nest Secure is connected to the internet over Wi-Fi and the system is unarmed, it should automatically download the latest software and update itself. You don't need to do anything.

Tag is a simple key fob that lets you disarm Nest Secure without a password. It doesn't need software updates.

Troubleshooting

There are a few things that may cause Nest Secure updates to be delayed:

Nest Guard

  • If Guard appears as "Offline" in the app, it won't update itself. None of your Detects or Connects will update themselves either.
    Troubleshoot when Nest Guard disconnects
  • If you subscribe to cellular backup and your Guard loses its Wi-Fi connection, it won't update itself while it uses the cellular connection. Your Guard waits until it has a Wi-Fi connection.
  • If your system is armed, it won't update itself until you switch it to Off Nest Guard off. This is to help ensure that your home stays protected in case you're away.
  • If you arm the system while an update is in progress, it should automatically cancel the update and try again in 23 hours.

Nest Detect

  • The Detects in your home need to be connected to the Nest Guard. If a Detect appears as "Offline" in the app, it won't update itself.
    Troubleshoot when Nest Detect disconnects
  • If a Detect's battery charge is very low, it won't update its software until you change the battery. However, all other Detects that have enough battery charge can still update.

Nest Connect

Manually update Guard

  1. Make sure Nest Secure is set to Off Nest Guard off. You can't update the software otherwise.
  2. Press and hold the 2 button.
  3. Keep pressing while Guard tells you its current version number. Don't release the button until Guard says "Release to check for updates."

Important: If you don't release the button when prompted, Guard resets to factory defaults and you have to remove it from your account and go through setup again.

  4. If an update is available, your Guard downloads and installs it.

Manually update Detect

  1. Make sure Nest Secure is set to Off Nest Guard off. You can't update the software otherwise.
  2. Press and release the button on the slanted side of your Detect.
  3. Press and hold the button again.
  4. Release the button when Detect's light blinks blue.

Detect should begin to automatically update its software and turn off the light when finished.

Manually update Connect

  1. Press Connect's button and release it. The button is on the bottom of Connect.
  2. Press the button again and hold it down.
  3. Release the button when Connect light blinks blue.

Connect should begin to automatically update its software and turn off the light when finished.

Nest × Yale Lock

As long as your Nest × Yale Lock is connected to Wi-Fi and the internet, it should automatically update itself when a new software is released. You don't need to do anything.

Your lock can't be updated manually.

Important: While your lock updates, you can't use the keypad or the Nest app to lock, unlock, or change settings. The update should only take a few minutes. The indicator light inside your home pulses blue during the update.
